Diary dates

A Curious Event/Exhibition in the Kent Countryside, 18th to 26th June – Local Canterbury artist, Justin Gilday, has a passion for the natural world and creates scenes and scenarios of insects – the real thing – cast in silver. These scenes are also a way of educating, often with a touch of warm humour or interactive fun – for example, exploring the life cycle of a hornet. Visit www.justingilday.co.uk • National Insect Week – 20th to 26th June – encourages people of all ages to learn about insects. In a free event, Justin Gilday will present an interactive and immersive installation featuring his art and sculpture. This is held in conjunction with the Grain Store Studio in the historic grounds of Brenley Farm, Boughton, near Faversham ME10 9LY (two minutes from M2). For other local events, visit www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk

Whitstable Biennale is a festival of performance, fi lm and sound, taking place every two years on the Kent coast. This year heralds the eighth festival, which is themed The Faraway Nearby. The event, from 4th- 12th June, has grown out of Whitstable’s extensive artistic community, and has developed an international reputation for showcasing the most exciting up-and-coming artists and fi lm-makers from across the UK and beyond, and engaging audiences in a rich programme: “A new pearl among the art-world oysters,” declared The Guardian.

Performances are varied – some last less than an hour, some are on view all day, every day. All exhibitions and events are free, although some require booking so it’s worth checking out the programme in detail. Festival HQ is at the Horsebridge Arts Centre. • Call 01843 596194 or visit www.whitstablebiennale.com
