Thames Valley office specialist appointed by Costa Coffee and MotoNovo Finance
Leading office interior design, fit-out and refurbishment specialist Morgan Lovell has won significant contracts to design and deliver new offices for two fast-growing British brands. Tasked to create the new UK roastery headquarters for Costa Coffee and to refurbish a customer service centre for MotoNovo Finance, Morgan Lovell’s breadth of experience puts the firm in good stead to deliver different and inspiring workspaces
Grounds for great coffee
For Costa, Morgan Lovell will create an 11,000 sq ft office, a product development area, a state-of-the-art specialist lab and training facility for Costa baristas. The office design not only reinforces the coffee theme, but will help to almost quadruple the business’s output, while improving the general work-life balance and environment for all team members. The roastery, responsible for the production of nearly all of Costa’s coffee, will be located next door and fitted with three 18-metre roasters to produce 45,000 tons of coffee a year.
Having been based in Lambeth on Old Paradise Street, London, for 45 years, the new facility has been christened ‘Paradise Street’ and will feature reminders of Costa’s proud London heritage. This includes the installation of large brick arches to mimic those that took prominence in its previous office, which will now be used as part of the breakout areas. There are also a number of modern features being planned as part of the fit-out. A ‘collision zone’ will be at the heart of the office to encourage communication, as well as a games room to emphasise creativity.
The complex design also focuses on the science behind roasting coffee and the specialist lab needs careful consideration as it plays a major role in the testing of each product. Morgan Lovell has designed a circular meeting room in the laboratory with blackout blinds and red lighting. These elements heighten the sensory experience for Costa’s masters of coffee who are focused on product quality and developing new products.
Money well spent
Further afield, financial services business MotoNovo Finance has awarded its office and customer service centre fit-out project to Morgan Lovell. Located in Cardiff's enterprise zone, the office move has been supported by Welsh government funding as part of a £100m investment and will see the creation of over 580 additional jobs.
With works due to begin in June 2016, Morgan Lovell’s appointment will transform over 71,000 sq ft of office space, set across five floors in Cardiff’s Central Square development. Designed by Foster & Partners, the building is the capital’s newest high-rise building and integral to the wider mixed-use scheme which, on completion, will provide over 1m sq ft of new office, residential and retail space.
After 10 years at its previous location, MotoNovo’s new address will be more than double the size, to better suit the company’s rapid growth. MotoNovo is looking to increase its headcount from 470 to over 1,000 team members in the next five years, while still maintaining its position as one of the best companies to work for (currently ranked sixth best place to work by The Sunday Times 2016).
As protecting and maintaining the company culture is a core aspect of this project, Morgan Lovell has been brought on board to design a number of wellbeing facilities including a canteen, multiple breakout areas and a gym.
Supporting wellbeing
“We are delighted to have been appointed on two such unique and exciting projects, especially for clients that consider staff wellbeing an important aspect of creating sustainable, successful businesses,” says Colin Allan, managing director of Morgan Lovell southern.
“Costa is one of the best known brands in the UK for quality coffee products and this project is essential to helping the business continue to grow and innovate, whilst, for MotoNovo, it’s move to Cardiff Central Square will create a workspace that fits it’s culture, ethos and business goals. Having understood the benefits of supporting staff wellbeing and how it is integral to keeping pace with the changing world of the workplace will result in wonderful benefits for both – an exciting prospect for us.”
