BANK OF THE YEAR Sponsored by:
Winner: HSBC
There were four banks selected by the judging panel as finalists for this much-prized title: HSBC, RBS NatWest, Lloyds and Santander.
The big question was who could wrest the award from HSBC? Throughout 2015, HSBC had been in ‘seventh heaven’ having won the ‘Bank of the Year’ title for the seventh time last year. Could HSBC make it eight wins out of nine?
HSBC continues to be the most active bank for corporate finance transactions with a total of 48 deals, across various sectors, with an aggregate value in excess of £10 billion. Deals completed by the Thames Valley-based team include involvements with Audley Travel (MBO), Aspen Pumps, British Car Auctions, Medivet, Ridgeway Garages, SDL plc, Sophos (IPO), Romans, and Zoggs (MBO).
RBS NatWest’s Thames Valley corporate team debt-funded the MBO of BOFA International by LDC; the MBO of CH&Co by MML Capital Partners; the MBO of Clearwater Group by Baird Capital and the refinance of Cohort plc.
Lloyds funded Synova Capital’s acquisition of Fleetway; was part of a bank syndicate on the acquisition of Harvest Energy; and provided debt on the complex, multi-jurisdictional refinancing of EDM Group. It also supported fast-growing Audley Travel and was part of a bank ‘club’ on Cohort’s deal with EID.
Santander supported The Light Cinema’s acquisitions; the MBO of International Logistics Group; and was part of the multi-bank financing of the Harvest Energy acquisition. It also debt-funded the acquisition of Dycem and the MBO of Deluxe.
Andy Hunt, commercial director of category sponsors BCMS, readied himself on stage to present the Bank of the Year trophy.

He then announced that the Deals Awards judges felt “there was once again one outstanding contender, a bank funding many headline deals in the year, and remaining the most active in the region” – HSBC.
Jon Stradling, HSBC regional director for large corporates, south region, said afterwards: “It's a privilege to win Bank of the Year as voted for by the businesses in the Thames Valley. While a strength of HSBC is our strong footprint across all of the UK, the Thames Valley remains a core region where significant investments are being made and major deals being done. We've also grown our market share quite materially, and over the past year we have assisted on a number of major deals in the Thames Valley, including the IPOs of Sophos and Softcat, along with being involved in several of the Deals of the Year shortlisted tonight.
"We want this accolade to be a further stepping stone to increasing our support in the region and to help more businesses realise their growth ambitions. To achieve this, we've got a great team in the Thames Valley that covers all segments, meaning we are available and ready to help no matter how complex or unique a customer's needs may be."
