DEALMAKER OF THE YEAR

Sponsored by:

Winner: Ian Barton HMT

With coffee served, Mark Durden-Smith drew attention back to the Deals Awards presentations, and the valued individual title of ‘2016 Dealmaker of the Year’.

This was also the first of three final award categories where guests would be voting on keypads to determine the winners of the Dealmaker of the Year, and two Deal of the Year titles.

Nominations for this award title were some familiar names from the evening’s proceedings: Andrew Thomson and Ian Barton of HMT; Duncan Lamb of Grant Thornton; and Clive Hatchard and his Spectrum Corporate Finance colleague, the newly crowned 2016 Corporate Finance Adviser of the Year, Simon Davies.

With over 25 years corporate finance experience, Andrew Thomson is a founding partner of HMT. A previous winner five times at the Thames Valley Deals Awards, Thomson is a prolific dealmaker.

Ian Barton is a lead advisory partner at HMT with over 20 years experience of dealmaking advice. He has led several prominent Thames Valley deals in the past 10 years including two deals that have been awarded “Deal of the Year” in previous years. In the past 12 months, Barton advised on the MBO of BOFA and the MBO of Whistl.

Duncan Lamb has over 18 years experience in transactions and has completed deals with a value of over £500 million. Focused on the mid- market, with particular emphasis on private-equity transactions, Lamb is one of the Thames Valley’s best-known CF advisers.

Clive Hatchard co-founded Spectrum in 2010 and in addition to his 20 years as a corporate finance adviser he has previously acted as CFO for both publicly listed and private equity backed businesses. He has led many

of Spectrum’s deals helping to establish it as one of the leading advisory businesses in the region.

Simon Davies, regular winner of adviser of the year awards, co-founded Spectrum Corporate Finance after gaining experience as regional CF head at Grant Thornton, and has acted on many of the region’s leading deals over the years.

Rob Hayes, partner at leading law firm Penningtons Manches, prepared to present the Dealmaker of the Year trophy. The digital voting process was explained and the audience voted.

Giant screens flashed up the result – the winning name of Ian Barton.

Dealmaker of the Year for the first time, Barton said: “I am absolutely stunned and can’t quite believe it. I am hugely surprised and very grateful to everyone who has voted for me, because to be recognised by your peers is something very special. I am genuinely quite emotional about it.”

What qualities won the award? “As a dealmaker, it is first of all about spotting the deal, initiating it, and perhaps just pushing on when other people don’t see the opportunity, and then, taking on the challenge and having the absolute tenacity to see it through. The deal with Whistl was the epitome of all of that.”
