A century ago, a baby could only be monitored by using a stethoscope

> You’re also opting to delay

clamping the umbilical cord! It used to be that the umbilical cord was clamped by the doctor, midwife, or dad, as soon as baby was born but now, thanks to recent research, many women are requesting that the cord isn’t cut until it stops pulsating. Tis usually happens about two minutes aſter birth and means that your baby will get a little more blood from the placenta; a fact, which many believe, will help to provide him with extra protection from diseases such as anaemia.

You – and your baby - are

benefitting fom better screening! A century ago, a baby could only be monitored by using a stethoscope, or a specially designed fetal stethoscope. Te 1960s saw the arrival of the electronic fetal monitor, which provided a paper record of the baby's heartbeat. Now, baby’s heartbeat can be monitored electronically through

placing a handheld Doppler device on the mother’s abdomen. Tanks to screening tests, it’s also now

possible to identify more problems and risks earlier in pregnancy than ever before. Down Syndrome, for example, can be diagnosed through the amniocentesis test.

You have more rights at work –

during pregnancy and beyond! Tanks to lobbying and campaigning, employers are now under increasing pressure to make sure that your working conditions don't put your or your baby’s health at risk. It is, for example, unlawful for your employer to dismiss you - or treat you unfairly – simply because you cannot do the same work as a result of health and safety risks during pregnancy, or when you have given birth, or if you are breastfeeding.

And, on the purely ‘frivolous’ side…

You’ve got a stylish bump! Gone are the days when pregnancy heralded the purchase of a pair of dungarees and, in

the third trimester, a delightful, ankle-length floral dress, which was usually so voluminous that it could be used post-natally for the entire family to go camping in! Tankfully the maternity fashion police

got involved some years and the high street is now full of jaw-droppingly beautiful maternity outfits, many of which are available in materials that can be nipped and tucked post delivery!

You’re into pampering yourself both during pregnancy and post

natally! Today’s pregnant women are much more willing to give themselves a little TLC both during pregnancy and also aſter baby comes along. Beauty salons nationwide have picked up on the trend and most are now totally clued up on what’s good for pregnancy and what isn’t, so pregnant women should always check that a beauty therapist is fully trained in these matters. „
