INTEL Stewart Regan, CEO, Scottish Football Association

Each issue we ask a major business figure what technology they use to gather the information they need to keep their finger on the pulse

Fitbit helps to keep focus on demands of fitba' business

» Apps and Apple also play central positions in staying ahead of the game

WHAT TECHNOLOGY (FROM GADGETS TO SOFTWARE, INCLUDING APPS) MAKES YOUR WORKING LIFE EASIER?

I’m currently obsessing over my Fitbit: given the demands of the job and the relentless interest in Scotish football it’s important to stay as fit and healthy as possible. I try to get into the office between 6.00 am and 7.00 am to do a workout and the Fitbit is great for making sure I’m focused and have the stamina for the week ahead. Te AdminControl App has been a

godsend enabling us to reduce the Scotish FA’s carbon footprint by safely storing Board papers and other confidential information digitally ahead of our formal meetings. Our IT Department has also developed a bespoke App that allows us to measure the progress of our strategic plan, Scotland United: A 2020 Vision, and highlight areas that need renewed focus in a very user-friendly way.

WHAT WEBSITES/APPS/MAGAZINES/ NEWSPAPERS DO YOU TURN TO FOR BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE?

I still enjoy the experience of thumbing through the newspapers with a cup of coffee but I also enjoy FC Business to keep in touch with changing business trends in football across the UK. More and more I find myself reading online via the BBC App and Twiter. My Head of Communications is also constantly sharing coaching, business or corporate articles from a variety of online channels.

WHAT BOOK(S) SHOULD EVERYONE IN BUSINESS BE READING?

Good to Great by Jim Collins is my own personal bible and I enjoyed reading Alastair Campbell’s insightful book on Winners, which is both an enjoyable casual read and a fascinating look at how world leaders and other prominent figures in business and sport share the same traits when it comes to planning and strategy execution.

WHAT DO YOU DO THAT HELPS YOU BOOST YOUR PRODUCTIVITY OR SAVE TIME?

Apple products! I’d like to consider myself tech-savvy thanks, in the main, to my three children but I genuinely couldn’t function without them: I have an iMac 27-inch desktop,

two iPads (one business, one personal), an iPhone 6 and Apple TV. Collectively, they enable me to do my work wherever I am and at any time of day.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?

If you always do what you’ve always done, you always get what you’ve always got. Okay, so Henry Ford might not have given

me that advice personally but it has become my mantra. One other piece of advice came from an

old boss at John Smith’s Brewery. He said there are three boxes in your life containing things you can control, things you can influence and things you can do sod all about! Don’t live your life in the ‘sod-all box’ and spend your time focusing on what you can control or influence! Very good advice in my opinion.
