John Brash unveils second stage of £1m infrastructure investment

John Brash has completed the second stage of its near £1m investment this year to significantly improve productivity, capacity, and health and safety at its Gainsborough headquarters.

The UK’s leading manufacturer of graded timber roofing battens, shingles and shakes, scaffold boards, and commercial anti-slip decking has unveiled improvements to its premises in a £200,000 joint venture with its haulage partner, JME Transport. The Manchester-based haulier has part-funded work to create 60% more space for the heavy goods vehicles loading up its products for delivery around the UK.

Previously, there was only enough room for nine lorries at any one time, but now the company can accommodate up to 24 lorries (eight of which can use its new loading bays) - meaning one lorry will be leaving John Brash & Co Ltd every 30 minutes from 6am to 10pm every day.

The investment has also seen:

The creation of a new outer roadway around the site - this will stop side loaders having to reverse out of alleyways; The installation of new heavy- duty cantilever racking with a roof system to store timber roofing battens, decking and its market-leading JB-Red timber roofing battens; More than 1,000 new LED, solar-powered, LUX-sensitive cats eyes installed in lorry parking bays to assist reversing at night and installed around walkways to guide pedestrians in the yard; A new CCTV system replacing the old one; The installation of a new drainage system to cut down on surface water in the yard; The installation of new concrete alley runs of stored timber.

The Chairman of John Brash & Co Ltd, Christian Brash, said that the official opening of the new improvements not only demonstrated the company’s commitment to growth but also the investment underpinned in three key areas.

“It is a proud day for everyone at John Brash & Co Ltd and JME Transport, as it is another symbol of our aspirations for growth and the commitment our business is making to ensure that we continue to be the market leader in graded timber roofing battens, shingles and shakes, scaffold boards, and commercial anti-slip decking,” said Christian.

“The single biggest benefit is that we have created more capacity in our yard through the use of more reclaimed land, as well as the more efficient configuration and better use of storage to make sure we get more lorries in and out faster. This, in turn, will improve the productivity of some of our logistics processes to keep up with the growth in demand for our products.”

CRA updates Standard Method of Measurement for Concrete Repair

The Concrete Repair Association (CRA), a member of the Structural Concrete Alliance, has released a new edition of its Standard Method of Measurement for Concrete Repair. The document, now in its third edition, has been fully revised to reflect new and current methods, practices and standards.

The Standard Method of Measurement for Concrete Repair aims to assist the origination of clearer Bills for Quantities for concrete repair work by providing a uniform basis for measuring concrete repair and for fully itemising all aspects of the work involved.

It provides notes on repair measurement and a specimen Bill of Quantities. The method of measurement includes detailed instructions for: General, Trials and Routine Testing; Surface Cleaning; Survey; Repairs; Crack Repairs; Pore/Blow Hole Fillers; Levelling Mortars/ Fairing Coats; Surface Coatings and Treatments; and Resin Injection. It also itemises time-related elements such as provision of access and site facilities.

The Standard Method of Measurement has proved of enormous benefit to construction professionals since the first edition was published in 1990. Being one of the CRA’s most popular technical documents, thousands of copies have been downloaded from the CRA website or provided in hard copy format.

The new third edition of the document is available for free download from the CRA website - www.cra.org.uk

Eurocell Modus maxes UK’s top energy ratings

Modus is one of two leading systems from Eurocell to achieve the BRFC’s most recent and stringent Window Energy Rating (WER) of A++. This landmark award is further recognition of Modus’s market-leading energy efficiency characteristics. The company’s Eurologik system has also been similarly recognised. Modus designs with the new A++ rating include casement, reversible and tilt and turn; together with the Eurologik 70 casement.

These windows are among the very first to achieve the ‘A++’ band in England & Wales for WERs since the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) launched the new rating in May 2015. A++ is only given to those windows with an energy index value equal to or greater than +20.

“Achieving the BFRC A++ ratings band underlines the fact the Eurocell is driving forward energy efficiency innovations that give homeowners the latest and best in high performance windows” says Ian Kernaghan, Product Design Manager.

The first PVC-U window and door system in the UK to offer a 12- year guarantee, Modus features a unique 75mm six-chamber profile system so it can achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 using triple- glazed units.

EUROCELL Tel: 0800 988 3049

It is available in nine solid and woodgrain effect colours, all of which are available with white internal finishes, while more than 40 solid and woodgrain effect finishes can also be ordered, with colour both internally and externally. With sustainability in mind, the Modus range consists of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, and has a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK.

Perfect for new build or replacement windows, the 70mm front-to-back dimension of the Eurologik 70 enables timber frames to be replaced seamlessly while providing clean sight lines due to its unobtrusive gasket line and slim profile. Available with chamfered or sculptured ovolo beads in a range of colours, the advanced performance of Eurologik profiles (including the optional six-chamber slim outer frame system) and PVC-U thermal inserts work together to lock in heat.
