Stars of tomorrow to design major new Ecobuild feature

Ecobuild has announced the creation of a major new destination as part of its 2016 show, a feature that will be designed by students from the Bartlett School of Architecture.

The DISCOVER bar will be a key social area for the show, facilitating networking and meetings. It will also be home to a display of ingenious materials which are coming to the construction industry to meet future needs.

In line with Ecobuild’s focus on design and next generation, a competition is being staged, in conjunction with stand sponsor Medite-SmartPly, to create the DISCOVER bar. The competition will challenge students from renowned architecture school The Bartlett to create a highly engaging design for the area which will make it a distinctive oasis within the busy exhibition floor, honing their design skills in a real life application whilst providing exposure for their work.

The winning design for DISCOVER will maximise the use of sustainable materials, including Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB, in line with Ecobuild’s goals to ensure that the show minimises environmental impact. The architectural students will also have to show how materials used will be disposed of after the show as part of their submissions.

“The Bartlett is delighted to team up with Ecobuild on a design collaboration for the DISCOVER feature,” commented Dr Guan Lee of The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. “This is a great opportunity for our UG10 students to design and build an architectural pavilion for the 2016 show and for their work to be seen by an international and diverse architecture community at Ecobuild.”

In addition to being the shows social hub, all shortlisted entries across 13 categories of the BD Architect of the Year will be displayed within DISCOVER, before the winners are announced on the evening of Ecobuild’s Architecture day. The BD Architect of the Year awards is one of the most prestigious in the UK and distinguished from other awards by honouring practices’ overall achievements within particular sectors.

DISCOVER will also be displaying the shortlist for Ecobuild’s Big Innovation Pitch 2016. The initiative sees Marks & Spencer again teaming up with Ecobuild to provide a platform for companies to pitch innovative sustainable building products and solutions in the hope of becoming a potential supplier to the leading international retailer. The 15 shortlisted entries will be whittled down to five finalists who will make their final pitch to judges on day three of the conference before a winner is chosen.

Ancon to launch new products at Ecobuild 2016

Double winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, Ancon Building Products, continues to expand its range of high integrity structural fixings and will exhibit a number of new products at Ecobuild.

On stand number E3080, Ancon will showcase its latest fixing innovations, suitable for new build construction including low- energy residential developments.

Products on show will include the lightweight Nexus® brick faced soffit

system, a number of insulated balcony connectors and an exciting new development within the Teplo range of low thermal conductivity wall ties.

Developed in partnership with cut-brick specialist, Ibstock-Kevington, the new Nexus system is a lightweight simple-to-install solution to creating flawless brick soffits in any brick type. It combines brick-faced offsite- manufactured building modules with Ancon’s popular MDC brick support angle. Bringing together two industry experts in one product launch, Nexus provides quick and easy alignment on site without mechanical lifting.

Further reflecting the sustainability theme of the exhibition, Ancon will also be focusing on ways of helping building designers to meet their thermal performance aspirations.

A newly-extended range of Ancon insulated stainless steel connectors enable structural integrity to be maintained at steel and concrete balcony interfaces without compromising on thermal efficiency. Designed to create a thermal break in the construction, these connectors are proven through thermal modelling to help prevent condensation and mould growth.

For exhibition visitors involved in the super-insulated end of the market, including PassivHaus and Zero Carbon projects, Ecobuild will hold a special treat - the launch of an exciting extension to the award winning Teplo range of ultra-low conductivity basalt fibre wall ties. By minimising insulation depth and wall footprint, these unique wall ties are already helping to shape low energy building design and this latest product development will see them become more user friendly for the installer, improving their all-round appeal.

Finally, visitors to the stand can get a taste of the company’s pro-active customer-focussed technical and sales support. Come and meet the Ancon team.
