Repair; Refurb; Retrofit Multi use Multiboard

Before the invention of thin set adhesive there was no need for a tile backer board because the tile adhesive itself would absorb any lateral movement in the sub-floor before it reached the tiling thereby preventing cracking. Much thinner beds of tile adhesive are now used and these provide less volume to act as a ‘movement sponge’ which is one of the main reasons for using a tile backer board. The original tile backer boards were, and still are, either particle- cement or fibre-cement boards - these provide a flat, stable substrate which can accept tiling but being a rigid board they do not provide decoupling (the movement sponge) which is a thick bed of adhesive or, as was common in the past, a bed of sand would have offered.

Marmox was one of the original developers of the foam-cored tile backer board which did not start arriving in the UK until the late eighties. The Marmox board offered many more benefits than the conventional tile backer board and this revolutionised the industry.

Marmox Multiboard addresses the two perceived problems with ceramic tiling; that they cannot be used on certain types of wall and that they are perceived as being cold. There are plenty of substrates such as concrete which are perfect for tiling on - there are however substrates such as floorboards, timber floors made of different timber types or simply uneven

backer board can hold up to 60kg/m2’. Marmox Multiboard has a unique surface coating which gives it the highest tiling weight of this type of board in excess of the 60kg.

Marmox is also proud that all of its boards can be used to provide a substrate for external tiling. Besides the standard panels which are used to clad external walls, its most popular product for external use is the sloping boards, frequently found on balconies.

Had a decorating layer of Marmox been used, it would have absorbed the movement which resulted in the cracking.

Another common site is tiles falling off plasterboard which has been used in a wet or humid area. Certain substrates can absorb moisture and when they do, they distort and squeeze the tiles off.

Plaster can support a weight of 20kg/m2. Plasterboard can carry slightly more at 32kg/ m2 but according to the Tile Association, ‘a tile

Additionally, Marmox Multiboard is a certified thermal insulation board as well as a tile backer board, improving the insulation of the walls can reduce the amount of surface condensation. The other benefit of an insulating tile backer board is the overall feel of a

bathroom. Just raising the temperature a couple of degrees can make the difference between a warm and inviting bathroom and somewhere scary to avoid by staying under the duvet for as long as you can.
