SmartPly VapAirTight ready to build an airtight case at Ecobuild
Set to revolutionise the timber frame industry with its outstanding airtightness performance making it the ideal panel system for ultra-low energy buildings, the new SmartPly VapAirTight structural OSB panel will be showcased at the event.
SmartPly is a stand sponsor for a major new destination at Ecobuild 2016 called DISCOVER, a central pavilion showcasing one of the UK’s premier architectural awards shortlist, a national initiative to find the next eco-innovator and a platform for future materials.
As a leading manufacturer of
engineered wood panel products, SmartPly proactively develops its pipeline of new and innovative products. The result of three years of rigorous development by SmartPly and extensive testing at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, SmartPly VapAirTight is recommended by the Passive House Institute as a product for providing airtightness.
Each panel features alternating layers of wood strands coated with a high quality formaldehyde-free resin system and wax to deliver outstanding levels of airtightness. A specialist coating is then applied to provide vapour control properties to ensure a premium performance OSB solution for super-insulated and passive buildings.
Available in a standard 2397mm x 1197mm size, the panel uses a newly developed high performance coating to ensure consistently high vapour resistance across its entire surface. The smooth and durable surface has also been developed to provide superior bonding of airtight tape at panel joints. Where air and vapour control layer (AVCL) membranes are notoriously difficult to seal, SmartPly VapAirTight offers excellent seal adherence to prevent air leaks, condensation and consequential structural damage.
Manufactured from FSC-certified timber to the specification detailed in BS EN 300:2006, the rigid OSB3 panel is a sustainable, robust and cost- effective alternative to specialist AVCL membranes. With minimal risk of damage during assembly, transport and installation, airtightness should not be compromised thereby ensuring the panel performs as well on the construction site as in factory controlled conditions.

Q-railing’s MOD 0749 glass adapter earns unique ‘AbZ’ approval
Q-railing’s focus on quality and safety pays off every time. The Easy Glass MOD 0749 glass balustrade has received a German ‘AbZ’ approval. That makes it one of only a few glass adapter systems in the world that are approved for creating a structural glass balustrade.
Approval of glass adapters is not, in itself, that rare. There are other suppliers who offer AbZ approved adapters. However, in this case, the approval is unique. Having been granted an AbZ approval, the Easy Glass MOD 0749 system is now one of only a few glass adapter systems (or maybe even the only system in the world) approved for use as a structural glass balustrade. Whereas other glass adapters need to be positioned at all four corners of a glass panel to create an approved structural glass balustrade, the MOD 0749 adapters only need to be positioned at the bottom.
Approved glass balustrade
AbZ is short for ‘Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung’, meaning ‘general building inspectorate approvals’. AbZ approvals promote structural safety by clearly identifying those materials and techniques that are considered acceptable. The AbZ approval of Easy Glass MOD 0749 means you can create an approved glass balustrade that has these glass adapters holding glass panels up to 1,500mm high and, incredibly, 2,500mm wide! The specific heights, widths and distances between adapters depend on the actual mounting situation. Q-railing supports installers and others by providing detailed information and free copies of the certificate.
Adjustable glass adapter A special feature of the Easy Glass MOD 0749 glass adapter is its built-in adjustability. This make it easy to straighten the glass panels on site. Easy Glass MOD 0749 also offers a choice of fixing methods: the base can accommodate a mechanical anchor, to be used for concrete walls, or a bolt for connection to a metal stringer. With this ingenious glass balustrade system, the distance between the glass and the wall is flexible.
