leader for civil rights, socialism, pacifism and gay rights. His belief in nonviolent resistance, earned him a leadership role alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. during the earliest days of the anti-segregation movement. His fight for equality was ongoing and lasting, as is his legacy. Rustin became one of the leading voices for the LGBT community in the 1970s—and most re- cently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in 2013. Each year the San Diego LGBT Center honors individuals, who, in his tradition, reflect that continuing passion for equality. The Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors recipients this year include Hon. Tony Young, Vernita Gutierrez, Camille Emily Davidson, Dwayne Crenshaw and Dion Brown. Join your fellow San Diegans on Friday, February 19 at the LGBT Center for the Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Honors.
