Consider the Garden... DECEMBER

by Kimberly Childers kimberlychilders@att.net

It’s December! Joy to the world. . .

SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Late fall in gardens can be exquisite and we are so GRATEFUL to have gardens at all! Asian pear trees, amazing,

with their spectacular amber leaves scattered

about the orchard. Or- ange bursts of blossom- ing milk- weed fl ow- ers along the east path mingling with tall, Honorine De Jobert anemo- ne, elegant stems topped with round seed heads, sublime in winter bouquets. A magic cir- cus of bright yellow, falling apple and walnut leaves scat- ter and weave into green grass, tucked crocus bulbs starting to grow beneath, plugs of creep- ing thyme throughout the lawn. Leaves gently fl oating, dancing and summersaulting in erratic breezes, crisp air of earliest winter is here at long last. I had an opportunity to chat with

Cindy Stewart, co-manager of King’s Nursery, about gifts for the gardener. “Every gardener needs a fra- grant fruiting orange tree,” she confi des! Myer Lemon is great too and probably the juici- est, Stewart added. No more buying lemons a-n- y-more. A dwarf tree, 8 to 12 feet

tall, will eventually supply your kitchen and probably kitchens of friends with lemons, lem- ons, lemons! Citrus blossoms are fragrant and delightful and you’ll wonder why you never had a citrus tree yourself! They need an organic soil mix, es- pecially for citrus trees, and seasonal feeding to make sure they continue to stay healthy. Make sure to plant them where they receive at least six hours of full sun for best fruit produc- tion. Deliver them to a special gardener with directions they might fi nd helpful and a big bag of the right soil to plant them in. Joy to the World. Bulbs, bulbs and more bulbs are in all the nurseries right now and on sale as well. Bulbs for

Joe heard a rumor that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all walked on water on their 21st birthdays. So, on his 21st birthday, Joe and his good friend Bill headed out to the lake.

“If they did it, I can too!” he insisted.

When Joe & Bill arrived at the lake, they rented a boat and began paddling. When the got to the middle of the lake, Joe stepped off of the side of the boat... and nearly drowned.

Furious and somewhat shamed, they both headed for home. When Joe arrived back at the family farm, he asked his grandmother for an explanation.

“Grandma, why can I not walk on water like my father, and his father, and his father before him?”

The feeble old

grandmother took Joe by the hands, looked into his eyes, and explained,

“That’s because your father, grandfather, and

great-grandfather were born in January... you were born in July, dear.”
