17th Annual Holiday Guide Stumptown Daze: New Novel by Local Sonoma County Writer

Sonoma County, CA. ~ Pick up your Stumptown Daze novel for that sweet X’mas gift. See you at the Monte Rio Holiday Faire at the Community Cen- ter on Dec. 5th & 6th. Below is another review.

This one is

from the Sonoma West Times & News.

Cheers.

The Review: “Once again John McCarty has for us a

work of fi ction about the Rus- sian River and its denizens and its deeps. With Memories that Linger and In the Rough, Stumptown Daze makes his third novel in this vein.

In all

three, McCarty gives us char- acters and plots that seem be- yond the pale but are actually rooted in history. “The setting for Stumptown Daze is Guern-

eville and its environs in 1960. So, you got your Gori’s Tavern and the Grove Dance Pavilion. You even got Skippy’s out Mc- Peak Road with the golf course nearby. And you got Murh- py’s Ranch which became Fifes and is now Dawn Ranch Lodge. As happens to many visi- tors to the lower Russian River, Walt and Lani come for a week- end, are cap- tivated by the area’s beauty and the tipsy turvy ways of its people, and end up staying. This brings on a series of donnybrooks, love connections, and other happen- ings you’ve got to read to be- lieve, or not.

The author can make the most jumbled scene seem like the norm along the River, which, in fact, it often has been and often is. “He also gives us authen- tic slang-fi lled dialogue be-

tween people in confl ict. Cuts and slights become real zing- ers, sometimes two or three a page. The story comes to a crescendo with the Stumptown Daze Parade which, then as now, fea- tures much that is wild, wonderful, and a

little

off in the River scene. The whole thing is kind of a hoot with local history lurk- ing behind it. Read it for the good times.”

Stump- town Daze is

available in the west county at Jenner Gift Shop, Gold Coast Coffee in Duncans Mills, Hand Goods in Occidental,

Bia’s

Café in Monte Rio, the Five and Dime, R.R. Art Gallery and Lark’s Drugs in Guernev- ille, and the Rio Nido Lodge. You can visit www.johnmc- carty.org for sample chapters of the author’s other novels.

JOKES & Humor # 5

lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, “Hmmm.... That’s funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills.”

The boy quickly replied, “That’s right, lady. The last time I found a lady’s purse, she didn’t have any change for a reward.”
