“Just Chillin’ A little History...& More by Ellie Schmidt ~ eschmidt@upbeattimes.com

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Yes! Peace, Joy and Hope… and Sugar Plums! ~ to all who share the dreams of Paul and Val- erie Doyle for universal

cheer and genuine friendliness and who deeply care about peace and humanity.

Cheers! To the fabulous re- searchers at Columbia U, NYC (btw my favorite Alma Mater) whose project is “Stop War!” They are inviting the world to participate in sending them how to “Say Peace in all languages!” They maintain: “The people of the world prefer peace to war and they deserve to have it. Bombs are not needed to solve international problems when they can be solved just as well with respect and com- munications.

The Internet Inter-

nationalization (II8N) community, which values diversity and human life everywhere, offers “Peace” in many languages as a small step in this direction.” Tantalizing request continues

with “Let’s show the world how people of many nations can co- operate to accomplish something small, which can be a first step towards accomplishing something bigger.” Allow me to humbly add

a glance at the current growing list of languages online in which one can say “Peace” is absolutely as- tounding. The understatement of my lifetime is to say I had no idea there are so many languages in this world of ours.

Note that often a

language listed, such as “Afar” is one spoken in several countries: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti where they all say “Salaamata” for Peace. The Asturian speakers of Spain say “Paz” but Catalan and Valen- cian speakers say “Pau,” while Spanish speakers in Spain, North and South America, Carribean and more say “Paz.” Welsh speakers somehow pro- “Heddwch,

nounce in or Tangne-

fedd” while Danish say “Fred.” German speakers say “Friede or Frieden”

Germany, Austria,

Switzerland, Liechtenstein, parts of Italy and Belgium. In UK, Ireland, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Su-Sa- haran Africa, Carribean and more it is “Peace.” The dazzling list of variations of “Peace” goes on and on, always adding more. And that is what this holiday sea- son is really all about. Our planet is filled with humans who have the capacity to care for one another without hate, malice, or evil intent. We each exist for but a limited time and by all means it is worth the ef- fort to show each other respect and kindness not only in this beautiful holiday season but always. Truly

Upbeat Times philosophy! Music is a universal language that communicates directly through emotional responses. Eminent re- search teams have confirmed late- ly the earlier hypothesizing by in- dividuals who claimed that when they heard certain music

they

could feel “goosebumps” or shiv- ers. Now science tells us that it is true that they can measure differ- ent responses on our skin while we listen to music. Happily, the scien- tists included all forms of music. That makes me glad because my pleasure in hearing what I like to call all “great” music is certainly not all the grand, classical music that I was lucky enough to study quite intensely as I grew older and even had the good fortune to enjoy performing in my youth. It makes my grandsons chuckle when they hear me say that I feel extremely happy when I hear my now “old” recordings of Carly Simon singing “You’re So Vain” or, maybe more shocking, the newest single “Hel- lo, Again” sung by the very tal- ented Adele from her new album “25.” Hey, my tingling spine has not lied yet. Since it is “gifties” time the Adele album would make a lot of folks happy.

Beautifully performed music, classical and every genre, is high on my list of Joy! This year, talk it over with the youngest set of family members and neighbors to give the very young the great

gift of learning how to play mu- sic not only listen. Now that has been proven all over the world that kids who are lucky enough to learn how to play any instrument and to sing are no doubt improving their chances of doing well in school but, maybe a bit more importantly, are using their minds and devel- oping greater thinking skills than those who do not learn music. The point is not to pressure kids to per- form but to help them enjoy all the rich menu of music forms intense- ly and more rewardingly. It is pure emotional pleasure to hear a fine, big choir with a great orchestra, all the way to a solo by Eric Clapton on the guitar. Goosebumps! If you are searching for gifts for “foodies” on your list, keep in mind a must have cookbook by the great chef, “Jacques Pepin: Heart & Soul in the Kitchen (2015).” Happy 80th Birthday, December 18, Chef Pepin! A joy to watch

In a breakthrough for American trade negotiators, Singapore recently relaxed its ban on chewing gum, imposed a dozen years ago for the sake of tidiness. Singaporeans now can law- fully buy ‘medicinal’ gum - including Nicorette and, on the theory that it promotes dental hygiene, Wrigley’s sugar-free Orbit - but only in pharmacies, and only after showing identification.

Cider was the most common fruit beverage in the U.S. up to the mid 19th century. Without refrigeration, fresh juice was very perishable, so apple juice was virtually all ‘hard cider’, being allowed to ferment to a low alcohol con- tent, usually around 5 percent alcohol. Next to water, this cider was the cheapest and most widely available bever- age year-round.
