Riders and coaches selected for ‘Step up to Gold’ programme

British Showjumping, in conjunction with Sport England and Newbridge Sport Horses, has selected the second cohort of rider and coaches on to the ‘Step Up to Gold’ Programme. Eight riders are now on the programme following on from four training and selection days, two each from the North, South, East and West.

The training programme will focus on developing riders in order for them to be able to make the transition into competing at 1.40m. The programme will also help riders to become established at that level. This year also welcomes on board Strength and Condition coaches from Sheffield Hallam University who will be working individually with each rider at the National Training days.

Based on a similar structure to last year, there will be three National Training days held during the course of the programme and riders will also receive regional training with their regional coaches and support at shows. The riders will

also be aiming to travel abroad to a national show at which they will be supported by Matt Lanni and their regional coaches. There will also be the opportunity to compete at an International show in the UK.

Alongside the rider development aspect, this year up to four deputy regional coaches who have been recognised for their coaching ability will have the chance to gain additional experience via the opportunity to shadow and work alongside the regional coaches as well as Matt Lanni at the National training days.

The selected riders from the North are Rachel Walker (North Cumbria) and Joanne Whitaker (South and West Yorkshire). The selected coaches from the North are Tracey Newman and Nicola Sheard.

If you are interested in being involved with this training programme, the applications for the third cohort will open around September 2016.

Angela Mills and Quids In II in action earlier this year

Spectators at Aintree Equestrian Centre had the opportunity to watch an ultra-competitive Dodson & Horrell 1.05m National Amateur Second Round in which 16 of the 26 starters retained a clean score sheet in the first round. Fittingly, twelve then went on to jump a double clear and in doing so, secured the 12 qualification places on offer. It was Angela Mills from Haswell in County Durham who took the victory riding her own 11 year-old gelding Quids In II. Angela and Quids In II had the benefit of the final draw and they used this to their advantage, knowing that a fast clear was essential, duly stopping the clock in 32.51 seconds. Second place went to 15 year- old Frankie Carr from Lydiate, Liverpool and Pipsqueek T, a 10 year-old gelding owned by Lydia Parrott. The pair produced their double clear in 33.40 seconds. Finishing third was Campbell

Thompson from Tarporley, Cheshire with his own 15 year- old chestnut gelding Croft Getto Kid, clear in 33.71 seconds. Dodson & Horrell 1.05m National Amateur Second Round Results – 1st Angela Mills & Quids In II – 0/0 – 32.51 seconds; 2nd Frankie Carr & Pipsqueek T - 0/0 – 33.40 seconds; 3rd Campbell Thompson & Croft Getto Kid – 0/0 – 33.71 seconds; 4th Hannah Alberta & My Boy IV – 0/0 – 34.73 seconds; 5th Angela Mills & Gibside Emily – 0/0 – 35.66 seconds; 6th Sian Hinkins & Kildemock – 0/0 – 35.70 seconds; 7th Sian Hinkins & Busy Lissie - 0/0 – 35.72 seconds; 8th Sharon Taylor & Kiers Rumour – 0/0 – 37.29 seconds; 9th Hannah Gair & Eruba – 0/0 – 37.64 seconds; 10th Janice Bartlett & Waikiki II - 0/0 – 37.70 seconds; 11th Peta Viner & Sagassa – 0/0 – 38.45 seconds; 12th Emmelia Davidson Slack & Amandas – 0/0 – 42.76 seconds.

With one of just three double clears, John Whitaker and Argento took the runner up spot in the dramatic CSI4* 1.60m Grand Prix in Leige, Belgium. Forty-eight combinations came forward to try and scoop the lion’s share of the €100,000 prize pot, but just eight faced the clock. John set the standard early on with his own and his wife Clare’s British bred 13 year-old stallion Argento with a textbook fast clear round in 35.11 seconds. Home rider Niels Bruynseels rode Cas de Liberte then blasted through the finish in 34.42 seconds to give them the lead and what was to be the win. Third place went to another Belgian rider, Jerome Guery, with Papillon Z, clear in 35.95 seconds.
