the big test

Grubs – Frostline™ Boots

The company says: Ideal for most working conditions or leisure activities, the boots feature excellent grip with a TRAX™ sole and HEXZORB™ DURAPRENE™ technology for comfort. Combining the unique INSU-FOAM ULTRA™ technology with the advanced 5.0 thermal engineering, these boots are extremely practical with their insulating and waterproof properties. SUPER-DRI™ lining for added warmth, UNDER FOOT CHASSIS™ technology and NITROCELL™ insulating and cushioning foot-bed for comfort. Mossy Green, Black, Fuchsia, Violet & Camouflage. Sizes: 4-13. RRP: £70.00. www.work-lite.com

Our tester, Pippa Hahn, says: These boots arrived on a day when my feet were already wet and cold. So, a dry pair of socks later, I slipped into my new insulated footwear. Instantly my feet felt warm. My next test was tromping down the field to get horses in with a 20 minute walk uphill on the way back. These boots have passed every test I’ve thrown at them as well as being comfortable to walk in and having a good grip. For me, a person with a slightly fuller calf, these boots are easy to slip my feet into and yet secure enough that they don’t feel as though they will be pulled off in the mud!

Tuffa – Nordic Thermal Anti-Slip Boots

The company says: Ideal for the coldest days on the yard or riding. Specially formulated rubber soles that are stirrup friendly and won’t harden or become slippery in temperatures down to -10 degrees. Breathable, tough microfibre uppers, waterproof ‘bootie’ membranes and Dupont ‘ComforMax’ insulation. Touch and close straps, spur rests and reflective strips at the rear of each boot. Black. Sizes: 5-11. RRP: £59.99 www.tuffaboots.com

Our tester, Pam Harrison, says: I loved these from the day they arrived and they were incredibly comfortable from the first time I wore them. I have hardly had them off my feet since. Extremely easy to put on and take off with one hand, they provide good support to your ankle, yet aren’t restrictive, so didn’t stop me working around the yard at my usual manic rate. They are also quite lightweight for such a ‘solid’ design and the reflective strips are an added bonus when you’re out hacking on a dull day. If you’re looking for new yard boots, these would be a great choice.

Musto – Ladies Training BR2 Jacket

The company says: A waterproof, four-way stretch fabric construction ergonomically cut to move with the rider makes this jacket ideal for training or riding. Windproof, breathable and lined with microfleece, this is a high performance jacket that protects you from the elements. The two-way front zip enables you to unzip from the bottom for comfort in the saddle and the cuffs can be adjusted with Velcro for a snug fit. Peaked hood is adjustable and can be rolled away for protection when you need it. Fire Orange or Navy. Sizes: 8-18. RRP: £165.00 www.musto.com

Our tester, Gillian McMurray, says: An extremely attractive, lightweight jacket in a neatly fitting style. Very comfortable to wear and, with its micro fleece lining, is deceptively warm. Two external pockets, plus an inner one, all of which are zipped for security. Mine arrived in the bright, fire orange fabric which, while not fluorescent, made it visible when worn during roadwork. I really liked the generously sized hood which fits over a riding hat but can also be stored in the collar when not required. Also the generous length of the sleeves with Velcro storm cuffs, and the drawstring around the hem of the jacket, helped to keep draughts and rain out. This jacket would make a very useful addition to anyone’s riding wear wardrobe as it is suitable for those wet, miserable days when a waterproof, cosy but lightweight jacket is required.
