intro
Well autumn has definitely arrived and whatever the storms are named, they’re definitely very wet and windy, which as means it’s harder to fit in all the work essential to keep horses happy and healthy. If like me, you have a ‘golden oldie’ to care for, winter can be a even more difficult, as older horses are inevitably somewhat stiff and need that bit more tlc, but they are so rewarding in many ways, especially if you have a long relationship.
With riding opportunities reduced by the weather and the dark evenings, not to mention the gale force winds, we’ve had an interesting time finding out how nervous horses think and whether a calmer might help to settle those nerves. Working outside brings another set of problems, so if you’re in need of some warm, waterproof clothing, you’ll find everything you need in The Big Test, as our testers have been putting a variety of great ideas to the test. See what gets the ‘thumbs up’ starting on page 24. If like many riders you are wishing you could find even a little bit of sponsorship to help with competition costs, then you’ll be interested in what a number of leading equine brands are looking for when they select riders to support. Sponsorship Insights starts on page 34 and it will help you make the right sort of approach to maximise your chances of being successful. It’s a time of year when award presentations seem to be taking place almost every week and there are some lovely stories in this issue highlighting just how much some people are committed to what they do in the equine world. Every rider is indebted to all those individuals who give generously of time, energy and often hard cash to keep the calendar busy. So when you’re sending out all of the Christmas cheer and New Year good wishes, remember that even a simple ‘thank you’ is always hugely appreciated.
Merry Christmas! Pam Equine Page 3
