the big test

NuuMed – Ear Pads

The company says: Perfect for those who ride on chilly mornings. These clever pads fasten onto the harness of any helmet using press studs, and have wool linings to keep ears warm. Durable black vinyl outers and perforations in the pads so the rider can hear.

Black. One Size. RRP: £16.95 www.nuumed.com

Our tester, Terri Graham, says: Sheepswool backed pads with popper strap fastenings that fit onto hat harness. Well made, easy to fit on hat straps, super effective at keeping ears warm, no more chilblains, yes seriously, chilblains on ears are painful ! Do not make you look like muffin the mule, wash well. A very important, clever little piece of kit and an absolute must-have for cold, winter days. Thank you!!

Horseware – Ladies Zara Sweatshirt

The company says: A colourful and funky round neck Herringbone sweatshirt, which blends in with the company’s Autumn/Winter colours. Contrast colour at the hem, cuffs, collar, across the shoulder with contrasting poppers and appliqued logo adding interest. Sizes: XS-XXL. RRP: £25.95 www.horseware.com

Toggi – Men’s Haughley Country Coat

The company says: Waterproof and breathable with taped seams and a durable water repellent finish, featuring lightweight padding throughout to keep you warm on chilly days. The collar contains a pack away hood to protect from showers, while double entry bellow pockets at the hem and hand warmer pockets at the chest keep hands warm and cosy. Olive. Sizes: XS-XXL. RRP: £150.00 www.toggi.com

Our tester, Chris Grant, says: Fitted like a glove as soon as I put it on. It is so lightweight and comfortable, and provided a great top layer in the cold, damp weather. A stylish jacket, suitable for dressing up for a smart occasion, yet would also look good for casual wear. There is a lovely soft lining with great finer details such as the hole for earphones to

come out of the inner pocket, a great selection of pockets on the outside, a lovely leather trim and adjustable cuffs which I approved of. I also liked that it was easy to clean, with a damp cloth or dry brush. Worn on a wet and windy day the coat did its job in keeping me warm and dry. The company have succeeded again with this one.

Horze – Unisex Winter Riding Pants

The company says: Full seat and stylish reflective side piping look great and provide extreme comfort for cold weather riding or yard work. Detachable suspenders keep them in place and side zippers make them a breeze to put on and take off. The water repellent, thick, padded material keep wet out and warmth in. Full length zip and two size zip pockets.

Black or Brown. Sizes: 8-20 UK. RRP: £57.99 www.horze.co.uk

Our tester, Pam Harrison, says: These are an amazing addition to any wardrobe! Easy to put on and take off – there are zips everywhere – and poppers to help ensure a snug fit. The elasticated shoulder straps mean they stay ‘up’ when working around the yard and perhaps surprisingly, they aren’t at all restrictive when riding, although I have only used them for hacking. Because they are so chunky, they don’t easily tuck into wellies, but I can definitely live with that and I found the zipped pockets big enough to be genuinely useful! If you feel the cold, these are definitely what you need this winter.

Our tester, Pippa Hahn, says: When this arrived, I opened it with a little dismay as it was maybe not to my taste. However, I have duly worn it a great deal over the past few weeks and it has been universally admired! It is toasty warm without being bulky, and whilst it has a fleecy feel next to the skin, the outer is such that hay, shavings and other yard dirt don’t seem to stick to it. It has washed well with no effect on look or shape.

Back on Track – Net Fleece Helmet Hat

The company says: Designed specifically to provide a snug fit underneath a riding helmet. The mesh netting, which covers the crown of the head, is very thin so it doesn’t affect the fit of the helmet while the fleece, around the lower edge, ensures the warmth protects ears and the higher vertebras of the neck increasing blood flow. Both are made from Back on Track’s unique Welltex®

fabric. Sizes: S – L.

RRP: £19.00 www.backontrack.com/uk/home/

Our tester, Maria Phillips, says: What a great idea. This product is designed for use under any helmet and I’ve used it under both my riding and cycling helmets. The mesh crown allowed air to flow freely and stopped my hat becoming hot and sticky, but the built in ear muffs kept my ears warm on cooler days. When I have used only a headband over my ears with my hat I found it slipped. Because the helmet hat is a complete product it stayed in place. It washed well by hand and dried without losing its shape or size. Super stocking filler at Christmas for anyone, as it is a truly unisex product not just restricted to equestrian use.

Nuumed – Bobble Hat & Wool Insoles

The company says: The insoles have wool tops, made from British wool, to keep feet warm and mesh undersides to prevent them from slipping inside boots and shoes. Sizes: 3-5, 5-7, 7-9 & 9-11 plus child sizes in 12-2. RRP: £6.75 & £5.65 (childs) The Aran knit hat has a warm, fleece lining and a large faux fur bobble on the top.

Grey or Brown. One Size. RRP: £20.00 www.nuumed.com

Our tester, Sue Porter, says: Warm and cosy from head to toe, that’s me!! The gorgeous hat fits beautifully and looks the part too. I especially like the faux fur bobble, a nice change from the wool ones. And, as for the insoles…well suffice to say that it’s now like walking on warm air. And the mesh undersides really do stop them from bunching up too. I shall be buying more…
