Our tester, Simon Buckley, says: I was really impressed with these; they do exactly what they say. Good, strong waterproof material, but supple at the same time allowing easy movement whilst wearing them. The lining ensured they acted as a second warm layer over your legs. Easy to get on and off, with full zip fastening. They also had the plus of a safety feature in the way of reflective piping. These are must-have for any rider at any time of the year.

Our tester, Anne Chappelhow, says: I have never before worn socks made from Thermolite and they certainly feel different, kind of silky and smooth. Although they appeared taut to stretch when I put them on, they were incredibly comfortable and remained so. No digging in at the top or ridging around the toes. They have been worn in my yard boots and for hiking. My feet were warm but not too hot and remained so all day. Washed at 40° and they come out fresh as ever. And at last, a thermal legging that really does measure up to its claims! It is so good to be warm, comfy and smart in light coloured breeches. No need to be frozen, when riding at shows in cold weather, with these you really can’t see you’re wearing them! They stretch and fit like a glove, and magically stay put at the ankle and waist. After several washes they still look good as new and maintain their fit.

Champion – Unisex Aintree Jacket

The company says: Fully waterproof and breathable, with taped seams to protect you from the elements, whatever the weather. With an anti-pill fleece lining for extra warmth, elasticated cuffs and hem and a practical concealed hood. Black. Sizes: XXS-XXL. RRP: from £70.00 www.championhats.co.uk Our tester, John Collier, says: A comfortable attractive jacket, one of those you will have walked past in the tack shop, looked at, and thought do I need one of those? Well, you do! It’s never been off my back, hung on the back of a chair in the kitchen and it’s the first one I grab when walking out the door. Lightweight but warm, ideal for feeding, looking for the dogs, getting in the coal, and smart enough to teach in. A really useful jacket, easy to wear and easy to work in. A great, practical item

www.theequinesite.co.uk Equetech – Cable Knit Headband

The company says: Deep, cosy headband, with fleece lining ideal for all yard duties and training. Black, Petrol Blue or Winter White. One Size. RRP: £10.95 www.equetech.com

Our tester, Judith Buckley, says: What a useful item. Small enough to fold up and keep in your pocket until needed. Warm, snug and ideal for wearing out in the fields, on the yard and even nipping to the shops. Brilliant for keeping hair out of your eyes too. Didn’t know I needed one, but now don’t know how I managed without it!!

Our tester, Sally Burns, says: Extremely comfortable to wear. I work outside on the yard all day and these have fleece lining inside them so your legs stay really warm. I’ve also ridden in them, they have plenty stretch, are very soft and you don’t sweat in them. I also didn’t get over-heated while wearing them in warmer weather, and the water seemed to run right off when it was raining when it was great, plus hay, straw and shavings did not stick to them either. Washed and dried naturally with no shrinkage of loss of shape.

Mark Todd – Ladies Snug Hoody

The company says: Perfect for keeping out those winter chills at bay when you’re out and about or working on the yard. Drawstring hood, front pocket and fancy stitched branded embroidery. Coral. Sizes: XS-XL. RRP: £39.99 www.wefi.co.uk

Our tester, Johanna Buckley, says: I wore this the day it arrived! A great item to wear with only a t-shirt underneath and a gilet, when no need for a heavy weight jacket - and we all know how much easier it is around the yard to complete jobs without bulky clothing. The fleece lined material made it feel very comfy, the hood came in useful and is ideal for early morning starts. Personally I prefer a full- zip type of hoody rather than a pull-over the head style, but the drawstrings could be tightened for a snug/cosier fit.
