Sonoma County, CA. ~ Glad- ys (Gwillim) Wing was born at UCSF hospital on August 3, 1910, and at age 105 she is still going strong. Her mother came from London and her father
from Wales, but she never learned much more about her fam- ily history because she was primarily raised by the Tucker family in Oakland, where she also at- tended school. She fondly remembers this wonderful cou- ple whose own chil- dren had already left home. The
Tuckers had a “huge” avery and when old enough she was responsible for helping keep it clean. Gladys also remembers a distinct custom during her
World War 1 childhood: If a family member was serving in the military, you put a star in your house window, which the Tuckers did. After fi nishing
high school
(before the Great Depression), Gladys recalled it wasn’t easy to fi nd work, but after much effort she found an offi ce job in San Francisco, which paid $100 per month.
She commuted from Oak- land via ferry and train (before the bay bridges were built) and her monthly income helped her cover transportation, offi ce at- tire (including hat and gloves), food and rent. In retrospect,

she wonders how she stretched the money to last all month, although she does recall some- times being offered dinner by friends! This was all before the social programs in this country that have continued to this date. Gladys married her husband Paul (known as Russ) at age 27. They met at a service station where Russ worked, and he later became an area manager with Shell Oil. Because of his job, he was expected to live in the district where he was work- ing, and they moved every 3-4 months when her older two sons were growing up. The moving was hard on them all, but what was needed. Russ was transferred to Santa Rosa in the late 1940s, but now with two more children they found it impossible to fi nd someone who would rent to them so they purchased a house and the older boys attended Proctor Terrace School. After years of moving, Gladys was ready to take up root and stayed in that home until 1999, when she moved to her current se-
