SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Local stompers defend championship for ninth win against competi- tors from across America! For over four decades, So- noma County Harvest Fair visi- tors have been cheering them- selves hoarse as they watch teams squish grapes beneath their toes, turning their clothes and skin purple with the juice that has become the region’s most famous commodity. In spite of the fact that grape stomping was replaced by the wine press years ago, Harvest Fair contestants are not de- terred from fully celebrating this storied tradition, vying for the title of World Champion and the $1,500 prize.

Another Victory for Nine-Time Winners at Sonoma County Harvest Fair World Championship Grape Stomp

ninth year. World Champion- ship Grape Stomp winners Kopa Kaluahine and Michelle Kaluahine from Santa Rosa, California have a string of wins a mile long, winning in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. They have held the title more times than any other team

in the history of the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. “We had a strong stomp this year. The grapes were a little shriv- eled, having suffered from the recent heat wave, but the stom- pers managed to squeeze out some juice. “ said long-time World Championship Grape Stomp organizer and emcee, Jane Engdahl. “ In addition to a strong local contingent, we had contestants from all over the country -- Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Min- nesota, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illi- nois and Ohio.

Plus, we had stompers of all ages, with lots of kids stomping with their parents in prelimi- nary rounds. The kids’ qualifying round

was the largest stomp this year, with 15 teams competing.”
