The Rower : Elaine Elaine’s strengths are her mental attitude, her physical stamina, strength and fi tness and her self- reliance, confi dence and ability to thrive in solitary environments.

Elaine was diagnosed with ulcerated colitis, a disease of the colon, 13 years ago. By the time she was diagnosed she had become very ill, lost two stones in weight, had constant abdominal pains and was unable to walk more than a few metres. Elaine returned to health once the correct diagnosis was made and treatment commenced and she has followed a rigorous dietary plan, as advised by her consultant, ever since, keeping the illness in remission.

To cross an ocean under her own steam has been a goal and dream that for years has remained unfulfi lled as Elaine was needed to support her mother Janice. Following Janice’s diagnosis of early onset dementia aged 55 she soon needed Elaine’s everyday support. For more than a decade Elaine proudly supported her mother and indeed gave up her career at that time to care for Janice full time, as the dementia slowly crippled her life. Elaine was with her Mum at the end, “I held my mum’s hand as she took her last breath and kissed her good bye”. All the pain and suff ering was over. Elaine feels the need to raise funds for this little understood disease - funds that will contribute towards the very promising work that is being done in dementia research thus hopefully preventing future generations
