Growth Mindset in St Mary’s EPS

During this term in Primary 5/6, we have been learning all about ‘Growth Mindset’. It has been fascinating to see the development of people’s mindsets.

We did a survey at the start of the topic to see where pupil’s mindsets were at. The results were: 3 pupils with a fixed mindset, 18 pupils had a growth and fixed mindset and 4 people had a growth mindset. A mindset is an attitude to learning. If you have a growth mindset you are ready for a challenge and you always want to try harder than you did last time but if you have a fixed mindset it means that you are negative about your work, you want to be the best but have an “I can’t do this” attitude to challenges because you don’t want to get it wrong. Having a fixed mindset isn’t necessarily a bad thing it just means you won’t improve on your learning and if you do think you have one you shouldn’t let it stop you trying new things.

We did another survey about two weeks later and results changed dramatically with one less fixed mindset and 7 more growth mindsets. It was great and we used the result of the survey to make our graphs in maths.

A neurologist is somebody who studies the brain and we were lucky enough to have a visit from one. We got to use special equipment that sent electric currents to the brain and we were able to see how calm we were. One of the pupils challenged the teacher to see how calm they could make their brain, the pupil won!

Everybody has had a great time learning about growth mindsets and we are all feeling positive about our year of learning! We can do it!
