Autumn... take control in times of change
It seems like no time since we were all getting ready for the summer holidays and dreaming of sunning ourselves in scorching heat. Well, for those of us who spent the summer holidays here in Scotland, there was very little in the way of sunshine but there was still that lovely sense of freedom for many of us and at least some days when we could relax and take stock.
But now, here we are again, moving towards darker mornings and shorter days and, for some people who are particularly aff ected by this, the new season can feel like a burden.
For many of us, there is much to look forward to in the autumn, Halloween, bonfi re night, those lovely crisp mornings and the build up to Christmas. Despite these big events and positive aspects, for some people the prospect of going out and coming home in the dark and the cold weather can leave them feeling a bit defl ated.
There are some positive steps that we can all take to help us face the new season with a positive attitude and a smile on our faces.
Eat Well; Autumn always seems to herald a move away from the healthy produce we consume in the summer. All that salad and soft fruit is swept away to make space for the familiar carbohydrate rich diet which so many of us consider to be comforting. We turn to pasta, pies and crusty bread all of which are great in moderation but we should still ensure that our diets are rich in colourful vegetables and fruit.
Make Plans; There are lots of exiting events to look forward to at this time of the year, however, some people still feel that they have nothing to focus on now that their much anticipated summer holiday has been and gone for another year. In reality, autumn is a

brilliant time for wrapping up well, going for long walks with family and friends and catching up with people we care about.
Enjoy The Sun Yes, I know that the summer is over and sitting down in front of the television can seem like the most attractive option. It is essential that we all spend as much time as we can outdoors in the autumn and early winter period. This important step can prevent the development of seasonal aff ective disorder (SAD) which can be triggered by the lack of sunlight. Even something as simple as going in to the garden with a cup of tea and the newspaper could make all the diff erence.
In some instances though, thinking positively, wrapping up well, getting outside and enjoying the autumn events in your area just doesn’t make people feel better.
If you follow all these steps and still feel empty and lethargic, then you may suff er from SAD, a form of depression linked to the lack of sunshine and light during the winter. Although this can be a distressing condition, there are several eff ective treatments. These include, antidepressants, light therapy, counselling and hypnotherapy.
Because hypnotherapy addresses the whole person rather than just treating symptoms, it is an eff ective and holistic approach, which is targeted at the individual. Your hypnotherapist will meet you to discuss the most eff ective way of working and tailor a programme to meet your specifi c needs.
