Now the real battle of Heathrow begins
The Airports Commission has come out in favour of a third Heathrow runway as the solution to air capacity in south-east England. It would come at the price of a ban on night flights, and the report by Sir Howard Davies also called for restrictions to reduce the environmental and noise effects. However, the plan would face considerable political opposition, with
many Tory heavyweights including the Prime Minister, who has made clear his opposition to the idea in the past. London Mayor Boris Johnson is also vehemently opposed to the idea. Sir Howard said in his report that a second runway at Gatwick would
also be a feasible option but the smaller airport would provide fewer connectivity benefits. The freight industry was enthusiastic. British International Freight

Association (BIFA) director general Robert Keen applauded the report, saying that while successive UK governments “have shown a singular lack of vision in the face of a massive surge in air transport and consequent pressure on existing airport infrastructure in the South-east” it hoped that Davies’ recommendation would move things forward and a start would at last be made on expanding UK aviation hub capacity. “It is now time for everyone, including politicians of all parties, to pull
