Convention News 2015 Hall of Fame Inductee

2015 Associate of the Year To quote Committee Chairman David Viers, “The Associate of the

Year award goes this year to a person who has been involved with not only Fairs throughout Florida, but has also helped the Florida Federation of Fairs with their services for over 30 years. This per- son does far more than what is required on the contract they have with Fairs and consistently goes above and beyond to make the Fairs better. This person has worked with the South Florida Fair, Florida Strawberry Festival, Florida State Fair and many others. This person, along with his wife, has funded scholarships for stu-

dents preparing for a career in music production and entertainment or a related course of study. I have had the privilege of working with this person before and it is my honor to present this year’s Associate of the Year award to DOUG KING.” Doug King is the owner/operator

of It is always one of the best kept secrets of the Florida Federa-

tion of Fairs. The committee takes every precaution to not have the recipient’s name revealed until the Saturday night banquet. Fami- lies are sequestered and as the presenter begins to announce the background everyone looks around the room seeing if they can get a hint of the recipient. It wasn’t any different this year as the story unfolded…..”Everyone has a story about how they got in this busi- ness. Lots of times animals have played a big part including horses and cows...4-H leader, advertising executive, educator. But

the

bottom line is “the kids.” Traveling all over the country to bring back ideas to the Fair and Federation. Our nominee has been ac- tive in the Federation as chair of many committees, holding every office, including President. Speaking of animals….from now on if you want to reserve our milkable cow you will have to call a Hall of Fame member.” BINGO!! All eyes on JEANNE KEATON. From the nomination form. “Jeanne has been manager of the St.

Lucie County Fair since 1993. In that time the Fair has grown from a 50 acre land locked small event, to a 250 acre land rich and growing Fair every year. Her biggest accomplishment was forging a partnership with St. Lucie County Government in building a central- ly located, premier fairgrounds and Fair event

that benefits our

whole community.” According to Florida Federation of Fairs Executive Director Lisa

Hinton, “Jeanne is always ready and willing to help with whatever needs to be done—whether it’s a Federation project, a new Fair trying to get started, a new board member that is trying to “figure things out,” or someone that just has a question—Jeanne is the first person to step up and help out!” Jeanne was raised in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Veterinarian

Doc Patton and his wife Virginia. According to daughter Stacy, “I spent my summers with my Papa and Grandma in Bradford PA where I was born. They lived on a 60 acre farm. My papa was a veterinarian, he was the most kind man. When my papa passed away when I was in my teen years and my grandma could not care for the farm, they sold it to another veterinarian, who could take care of the animals in the tri county area. Three of the horses were shipped down here for me to continue to love them. I showed them for many years and they have been a blessing not only to me but other 4-H members in our county. They went to college with me for a time. Mom always made sure we had the best opportuni- ties to learn and give to others, and she leads by example.” Jeanne’s family consists of mom Virginia Kerr, daughters Stacy

and Kiley, her grandchildren Shelby, Taylor, Kiersten, Alaina, Kam- ron, Karissa, Kalena, and Bryce. Most were able to join in the sur- prise. Several friends and Fair board members were also on hand to join the celebration.
