What’s Happening at NICA Temperatures are

Thanks to Tim O'Brien and Russ Harri- son for representing NICA at the con- vention. NICA sponsored a workshop titled "Finding The Balance - Profitable Concessions = Successful Fairs"

starting to warm up and summer events are starting all over the country. NICA has just participated in the IAFE Zone 1 meeting in Buffalo, New York, the Federation of Fairs and Zone 2 meetings in St. Augustine, Flori- da, and the IAFE meeting in Springfield, Missouri. At all three events, the attendees gathered ideas and shared information that can only enhance and make the Fair industry better. Additionally,

The NICA office has a new staff who is working effortlessly in making sure NICA as a whole is operating at its highest potential. Within the last 2 weeks, we have processed over 100 renewals! The sheer amount of new memberships and renewals this year are proof positive that NICA is not only maintaining, but growing. We are excited about this summer and moving forward!

IAFE

Scholarship Winner

Each year the Florida Federation of Fairs offers a scholarship for the IAFE Institute of Fair Management program. This year's recipient can use the funds for airfare, hotel and registration for the Institute of Fair

Management summit. We had many quality applicants apply for the scholarship and ultimately the scholarship was awarded to Lisa Dudding from the South Florida Fair. Lisa has been in the Fair industry for more than 13 years and has been the entertain- ment coordinator at the South Florida Fair for the past 8 years. Lisa enrolled in the Institute of Fair Management to further her knowledge of all areas of the Fair industry and to be able to share and teach others what she has learned. Lisa was excited to learn that she won the scholarship and is looking forward to attending the upcoming Summit. In addition to the IFM Scholarship the Federation also awarded

three convention scholarships to YPI members and three conven- tion scholarship to Fairs that haven't attended in the past three years. The scholarships covered registration and hotel accommoda-

tions. We received ten applications for the YPI scholarship, the YPI winners were: Lightning Dixon from the Osceola County Fair, Yaritza Williams from the Hillsborough County Fair and Nicole Jones from the St. Lucie County Fair. The scholarships for Fairs that haven't attended in the past three years went to Jesse Lewis from the Alachua County Fair, Kristie Popa from the DeSoto County Fair and Lynn Touchton from the Suwannee County Fair. The Federation is awarding scholarships to attend the Summer

Workshop in Hillsborough County, July 31-August 1. The scholar- ships will cover registration and hotel expenses, go to flori- dafairs.org to apply.

Zone II Update We’ve just wrapped up our joint meeting with the Florida Fed-

eration of Fairs in St. Augustine for spring, 2015. All in all it was an outstanding meeting with many informative and educational sessions, one of the largest trade shows for the Florida meeting and of course, plenty of opportunity for networking and catching up with Fair friends from Florida and the Southeast U.S. Thanks to our Zone friends who made the special effort to continue this get together. With this being my last year as Zone 2 Director a Nominating

Committee has been appointed to seek out and screen candi- dates for our new Zone Director to be elected in Las Vegas this coming November. Committee Chair Marty Svrcek of the Mont- gomery County Fair in Maryland is joined by Martha Leverock of the Greater Jacksonville Fair and Tommie Tyler of the Coastal Empire Fair in Georgia on this committee. While it is unlikely that our next Zone Director would come from the State of Florida, I would encourage you to suggest possible candidates to anyone on the committee. We’re all fortunate to know individuals from Fairs outside of Florida so if you’re familiar with someone who you believe would be a good candidate, make your thoughts known. Speaking of communicating with Fairs from outside of the Sun-

shine State, if the opportunity presents itself for you to be speak- ing with someone from another Zone 2 Fair, please encourage them to attend our meeting next spring in St. Augustine. As we all know, the networking opportunities during our meetings provide some of the best chances to learn about how other Fairs handle issues that we all seem to have at our Fairs and the more folks from Zone 2 that we can bring together just makes our Zone 2/ Florida Federation of Fairs meeting more beneficial to all. Take care and have a wonderful summer.
