If you’re a lover of Americana and good old down-home music, the Maverick Festival is the one for you. About an hour and half from Norwich, it’s a celebration of Americana and roots music from both sides of the Atlantic on five stages as well as comedy, dance, film and workshops. Tere are forty different artists playing across five stages including Joel Raphael, Ben Folke Tomas and Scottish bluegrass group Te Dirty Beggars. Billy Bragg and Chastity Brown are your headliners, but there’re any number of brill other musicians and performers to get your toe tapping over the weekend, some you’ll know, and some of whom will be new to you. Set amongst picturesque Victorian farm buildings in the Suffolk countryside, this festival is very family friendly and you can even bring your pooch along. It’s small, intimate and very civilized. You can enjoy a massive range of food from paella to duck pancakes and wash that down with a gourmet milkshake or maybe a Suffolk cider. With a weekend camping ticket at only £79, you can’t go wrong; Sounds like a lovely weekend in the countryside, innit.

Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire Perfect for: mucking about and enjoying great tunes
Te Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire is infamous for its hedonistic thrills. Te theme this year is ‘childish things’ so expect lots of fun, games and creative costumes. With boating and punting, a paint fight, hotdog eating contests, dance off’s, games arena, guerrilla science zone, a 24 hour local boozer, parades, a village hall, action camps, kids area and an arts garden, if you can’t find something you want to do then you might already be dead. Apart from all those distractions (and many more besides), you could catch some live music from the likes of Jungle, Public Service Broadcasting, Kate Tempest, Temples, Roots Manuva, Eaves and Beans on Toast. Tere’s even a stage solely for R ‘n’ B and soul, Te Crossroads. Te Living Room will feature the best acoustic acts around, and Te Drop is a dance hollow feat Joy Orbison amongst others. With a musical circus, Small World and a campsite filled with impromptu jam sessions, there’ll be no time for rest at the Secret Garden this year. Non stop japes.
