One global sheeting business for BW Papersystems
S
ince the formation of BW Papersystems in June 2014 as a global supplier of sheeting and
sheet packaging machinery for the paper converting, manufacturing and packaging industries, its parent company, the $2bn-a-year Barry-Wehmiller group, based in Wisconsin, has been turning component companies into a global machinery-building and customer support operation. It follows a strategy followed
by Barry-Wehmiller which, under its chief executive Bob Chapman, has expanded its business in the packaging industry with acquisitions of specialist manufacturers that are integrated into a global operation without losing their identity. BW Papersystems was created with the acquisition of ECH Will, Pemco and Kugler-Womako by Barry-Wehmiller group company MarquipWardUnited. Its sales for the full year in 2014 are more than $370m. In March, Neal McConnellogue, who has been with Barry-Wehmiller for many years, was appointed president of BW Papersystems.

The strength of BW Papersystems is said to be in its diversity, with sheeting and packaging machinery and solutions for standard and custom applications aimed at a range of customers from small converters to the largest paper mill group. Targeted technology provides a leading position in sheeting solutions for folding carton plants, paper merchants and converters and beer label production. The group is also heavily engaged in the stationery and security document markets, with exercise book lines made by Will-Pemco, at Hamburg in Germany, and spiral binding and passport manufacturing machinery built by Kugler-Womako in Stuttgart.
With global sales, service and spare parts teams, the service
that BW Papersystems offers its customers is supported by more than 150 technicians and spare parts warehouses in Germany, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore and Shanghai. The combination of Will-
Pemco and MarquipWardUnited technology is said to offer exciting opportunities. Will-Pemco, evolved from brands ECH Will and Pemco, specialises in cut-size and folio-size sheeting and packaging of paper whilst MarquipWardUnited offers board sheeting solutions. “The process of combining the
best and, out of that combination, further developing new valuable solutions for our customers, has already begun,” said Martin Brandt, product development chief at Will-Pemco, “involving design and operations teams

from various BW Papersystems locations worldwide. Patrick Walczak, global mills sales chief at BW Papersystems, said: “This progress has been acknowledged and rewarded by our customers. Major orders have been received creating the highest level of order backlog for many years in our plants at Will-Pemco in Hamburg and Sheboygan in the US. Our plant in Phillips, US, is not far behind. Orders for cut-size sheeting and packaging lines and exercise book machinery have really taken off in the last six months.” More information from BW

further and achieves maximum performance in severe conditions. The QualiFlex product range includes press sleeves for pulp, tissue, board, packaging and graphic paper grades. For each paper grade, customers can select from both product lines according to their operating needs.
The newly-developed press sleeves are said to play an
important role in optimising the press efficiency, as the material properties of Crest and Crown have been specifically customized to suit the requirements of each application. In addition, the wide range of void volume patterns contribute to better dewatering. More information from Voith at
