ROADMap TEXAS TRUCKING TRENDS Study finds Texas carriers increasing driver benefits, safety investments
BY STEVE BRAWNER Contributing Writer
What does the average Texas trucking
company look like? For answers, read the Texas Trucking Industry Study. Based on answers given by carrier
owners and top executives to 38 questions, the study showed that the Texas trucking industry is clustered but diverse. Ninety-four percent of respondents work for small com- panies with 10 or fewer drivers. Fifty-two percent are owner-operators, while a third are independent companies where the own- ers or principals do not drive trucks and

where the company serves many customers. Ten percent are dedicated private fleets, and seven percent are non-dedicated private fleets owned by a company that is its prima- ry but not only customer. Seventy percent classify all drivers as employees, while nine percent hire only independent contractors and the rest hire both. While 71 percent of small firms classify all their drivers as employees, among large firms, it’s 42 per- cent. Seventeen percent are TXTA members. About 39 percent are headquartered
in Dallas, Tarrant, Harris and Bexar coun- ties. That’s almost exactly the same per- centage of Texas’ total population that live
in those counties. The rest are disbursed throughout the state. Galloway Research Service conducted
the survey, which in March and April sam- pled 335 of the 18,549 Texas-based motor carriers listed in the 2014 Dun & Bradstreet database. The study has been conducted each of the past four years. It was under- written by the Texas Trucking Alliance, which is a collaboration of TXTA, TXTA Foundation, Business Financial Group, The Bassett Firm, SelecTransportation Resources and TravisWolff. The full study is available for pur-
chase through TXTA.
