THE NEXT GENERATION HAS ARRIVED New council targets and grooms future industry leaders

BY TODD TRAUB Contributing Writer

The military has its officer schools

and academies. And now, Texas Trucking Association has its Emerging Leaders Council. Founded in 2013, the Emerging

Leaders Council (ELC) was created to iden- tify and cultivate Texas’ next wave of trans- portation industry leaders. The council offers a chance for up-

and-coming leaders to network with peers on a broad scale, enhance their leadership and management skills, and gain a thor- ough understanding of TXTA and the transportation industry.

gural class of the ELC,” said council secretary Christi Yost, project manager with Houston-based W.M. Dewey & Son, Inc. “So many of our duties to

date have been sorting out the bylaws, electing officers, outlining educational ses- sions and social events. We have also host- ed a fundraiser for TruckPAC and plan to host one for the Foundation, too.” While the council is still in its infan-

cy, the meetings will be built around a spe- cific issue related to the industry or spot- light better business practices. A social event is also included to help build and strengthen relationships among council members and their peers. “It is a great setting for networking

and learning ‘tricks of the trade’ from more

experienced members of TXTA,’” Yost said. “The ELC will be a good stepping stone for future leadership in TXTA.” The 23-member ELC has a two-year

term, and its members must attend four of the six meetings held each year to remain in good standing. Depending on one’s role with ELC, individual responsibilities can vary, especially if a member is elected as an officer.

“After your term, Woods

you are granted emeri- tus membership,” said ELC Vice Chairman Brandon Woods, vice president of Refrigerated Transport Inc. in Arlington.

“Emeritus members may continue to attend King

meetings and func- tions, but are not required to, as a way to continue to build rela- tionships and network.” Jessica King, chief

financial officer at Palletized Trucking

Inc., also based in Houston, is ELC treasur- er. She must attend all council meetings, all officers meetings and coordinate with the TXTA staff advisor to approve all expendi- tures.

“I feel that the Emerging Leaders

Council provides a huge benefit to the industry,” King said. “By educating and nurturing the up-and-coming leaders in the industry, our members are able to use
