better employee and supervisor by allow- ing me to meet and talk with other people my age in my industry,” Woods said. “And learn how they may handle a situation dif- ferently than I might. Or they may offer up solutions that I may not have even thought of.” Of course the ELC exists to help


TXTA as well. Council members are exposed to and informed about major transportation industry issues and pending legislation in order to be better able to serve the interest of TXTA and the indus- try in general. “The purpose of the ELC is to encour-


age a new generation of trucking industry peers to step up to the plate,” Yost said. “We are faced with many challenges with day-to-day operations and always new industry standards that come down from


the government.” King notes that TXTA exists at least


in part, to make sure the industry has a voice with government at the state and fed- eral level. She took part in TXTA’s Call on Washington, the American Trucking Associations’ initiative that allows mem- bers of state associations to visit their elect- ed representatives to talk about major issues. “There are many laws, regulations


and government action which greatly affect our industry — TXTA has a vested interest in making sure that government actions don’t negatively affect our industry,” she said.


And as for the emerging leaders


themselves, the effect of the council and their involvement has been nothing but positive. “It’s not as though I was not commit-


ted before — I was always committed to Palletized,” King said. “But now I have a new outlook on my company. I have more desire, more drive, and I have set my goals much higher. I see my peers’ success and know that we can realize that same success here at Palletized.”
