ho would have thought grocery shopping could inspire a flooring trend? But since Safeway started installing commercial vinyl planking and luxury vinyl planking, it has
look but with the forgiveness of traditional vinyl flooring,” said John Kerber of Kerber Floors, this year’s winner of the “Best Flooring Store’ category in the Best of the Best survey. “It doesn’t dent, it doesn’t scratch and it
doesn’t wear out and it doesn’t need waxing. It doesn’t need maintenance,” he continued, adding it has been a popular trend for the past five years. “People were inspired by grocery
shopping. Who would have thunk it?” he asked. He said there are a lot of different
designs available. “There is everything from simple designs to barn board,” he noted. More importantly, new materials are easy to replace and
repair without being able to see the seams. They are also waterproof which helps limit flood damage to floors. “All you have to do is pull it back and let it dry out,” he said. He said carpeting styles are a throwback to the past. But
while what’s old is new again, with new comes the newly improved. “Short shag carpeting is back,” said Kerber, who has been
part of the family run business since shag carpeting was first popular. His dad started Kerber Floors in 1958. “You could count the individual tufts originally,” he
observed. “Some of those old trends are new again. People are going
back to traditional styles,” he said, adding others, like hardwood flooring, are going by the wayside as a result of the new materials like hard surface vinyl flooring which looks like real wood. “There are super nice wood grains that look like hardwood
floors,” he said. “I wouldn’t recommend hardwood floors for households with
a lot of traffic or dogs because it scratches,” he said, adding the new vinyl sheet flooring materials are more durable.
