Technology enhances field of heating, air conditioning

ethbridge home owners are embracing new technology for their heating and air-conditioning needs. “We have a lot more Wi-Fi and
handheld Android projects now. You can not only adjust the temperature from your phone, but the app also offers energy usage statistics,” said Chris Bruce, sales and marketing manager for KB Heating and Air Conditioning, winner of two categories in this year’s Best of the Best survey — “Best Heating and Air Conditioning Store” and “Best Furnace Cleaning.”
He said the remote-
controlled climate control systems applications for smartphones are as easy to install as they are to use.
“If you can use a smartphone, you
can use these. If people aren’t as familiar with technology, we’ll take the time to show you,” he said.
He noted they can easily be installed in
homes with older furnaces, though they are best installed for furnaces that are 10- 15 years old.
“Some rewiring might be necessary,” he
said, adding people enjoy the convenience of these apps.
“If you have a summer home or cabin
and are worried, you can control them from your phone,” he said.
“Or if it’s a hot day and you are at work,
you can turn the air conditioning on from your home so it is nice and cool when you get home,” he continued, adding popularity of these apps is growing. “It didn’t used to be that way. It used to
be a niche market,” he said. He noted many of the staff are dedicated
to installing air-conditioning systems, so an air-conditioning system can be installed in a matter of days. “But don’t wait until it is
plus 35. Get it done in spring,” he recommended. He said CO2 detectors are
also popular. Periodic cleaning of ducts is
also a good idea. Bruce said clean ducts mean clean air and improved health. “It’s important because it
maintains healthy air quality,” he said. “It eliminates contaminants
and it helps your furnace run at peak efficiency. We clean everything,” he continued, speaking of their special
platinum package. “We look it as being like a spa day for
your home,” he said. KB Heating and Air Conditioning began
in 1983 as a duct cleaning company but expanded into sheet metal, plumbing fixtures, electric fireplaces and much more. Today the company has approximately 130 employees. They are also involved in numerous
major retrofits including the Enmax Centre. They are currently working on the Trades and Technology Renewal Project at Lethbridge College, which should take them three years to complete.
