eople like straight lines and brighter colours for their furniture. While home furnishing trends don’t tend to change as quickly as fashion trends, Leons general

manager Jordan Visser has seen a few come and go since starting work there in 1999 and becoming the manager in 2006. Leons was chosen as “Best

Furniture Store” in the Sun Times’ annual Best of the Best survey for 2015. “There has been a lot of

changes, more with colours more than anything else,” Visser said of the latest home furnishing trends. “People want brighter

colours to accent more regular colours of browns and greys,” he added. He noted decorating

company Pantone announced this year’s “in” colour is marsala, which is a shade of burgundy. “It will be the hot trend of the year, though they only

announced it last month,” he said. He observed it takes approximately two years for trends

to be completely embraced. “Two years ago, there was nice yellow that people still

want. There are always a portion who like to be on the cutting edge, but a lot of people still like traditional styles. We have a floral couch on the floor that is a consistent seller,” he said. In addition to colours, he noted styles and shapes of

furniture change. “Straighter lines are definitely more popular now,” he

said. “There is a large population of older people in Lethbridge who want traditional furniture, so we make sure that is represented on the floor.” Materials go in and out of style as well.

Jordan Visser, general manager at Leons Furniture, sits on a popular-selling love seat. “Lethair is a 100 per cent polyester material that looks

and feels like leather and cleans like leather. That’s pretty popular,” he said. He said how often people upgrade their furniture varies

with the customer. “Some people will get new furniture every two years,

but others buy the higher-end sets, planning on keeping it for 20 years,” he continued.

He noted surprisingly, prices for furniture have actually

decreased over the years. “In 1999 a set that was $3,000 is now $1,200,” he

continued. Leons furniture has been in Lethbridge since 1985.

Before that it was Capitol Furniture which had been in operation since the 1930s. “But it is still locally owned and operated,” he said.
