Lakeview Bakery has the recipe for success F

ormore than 30 years Lethbridge residents have been indulging in decadent pastries and fresh, homemade bread at Lakeview
Bakery andDeli. A longtimewinner in the bakery category, Lakeviewwas also named Best of the BestDeli this year, provingwhat customers have known all along, there is nowrong choice off themenu at Lakeview. “We’ve been growing steadily
over the 30 years. We started out as your typical bread and buns and pastries andwe sawa change in themarket,” explainedDarleneMcKee,who owns and runs Lakeview alongside her husbandHugh. “In around 2000we put in a
deli.We had fresh buns already, so we put in a deli and startedmaking sandwiches, and thenwe expanded again; nowwe’ve got soups every day, usually three. We have perogy specials, chili specials. We are started doing catering in 2002; a lot of placeswanted luncheons and breakfast
pastries.Nowwe are incredibly busy and it’s a good thing.” Between tarts and squares, breads and
soups, one aspect remains consistent: their dedication to fresh, local products. “We’re fresh andwe’re quick,”McKee
notes simply. “We take a lot of care to ensure our products are fresh. We shop typically four times aweekwe don’t bring in a lot of stuff on trucks.” “People come here and they can get

whatever theywant on their sandwich or get a premade one, it’s all totally fresh.” In aworldwhere Subways are nowthe
most popular and available fast-food restaurants, Lakeviewhas never had a
problemattracting customers. In fact, McKee attributesmuch of the store’s success to their passionate, loyal customers. “Typically everything has beenword of
mouth. We did some advertisingmany, many years ago butwe found that people were coming in and saying they found out about us through somebody else.” “I thinkwe have developed a loyal customer base becausewe have kept prices reasonable, and our product is really fresh every day. We run almost 24 hours a day with a shift on, our girls are here really early at four in the morningmaking sandwiches and salads,” she continued. “We have a great group of
peopleworking for us,we’ve sort of become a family. Some of the staff has been here for 30 years. We have fun atwork and don’t take things too seriously
all the time. The staffworks really hard for us.” Loyal customers also includemany local
grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants, as well as both the college and university, all ofwhomhave chosen to serve and sell Lakeview’s bread and buns. Rivalling customers’ love of their bread
are their newly incorporated Perogy Tuesday and Chili Thursday, whichMcKee says can at times create lineups out the door. Regardless of the reason for the visit,
whether it be fresh bread, a bowl of soup or simply for a child insisting on their Lakeviewcookie fix, youwill not be disappointed onwhat you leavewith, which is generallymore thanwhat you came in for. LakeviewBakery andDeli is located at 405 StaffordDriveN.
