albums off the stage. He noted everything came together on a

new live album called “Jasper” he recorded at the Jasper Legion, which originally was put together for a free promotion for a beer company. However, when that fell through, he decided to release it and tour on it anyway. It includes a lot of the songs from his previous album “Coyote” and his previous two EPs. Berglund hit his stride with the last CD

“Coyote,” which combined a lot of his different influences. “We really twanged it up. But there’s

western blues and I’ve always been a fan of ’90s country like Alan Jackson,” he said. He credited Jasper Legion’s Ken

Kuzminski for the live album. “He called the company up and got it all

started,” he said, adding Kuzminski has been a long-time supporter of Berglund and many other country musicians. “Everyone plays the Jasper Legion like

Corb Lund and Del Barber. They’re building a great culture there,” he said, so when Kuzminski came to him with the live recording idea, the decision was simple. “It was a no-brainer,” he said. “I hadn’t originally intended to release it.

But Ken captured the show so well. it was a great audience. They were turning over the tables. All the work was done anyway,” he said, adding while he is in charge of his own career, it is wonderful to meet a champion who supports him. “I never thought it would be as

successful as it had been,” he said, adding he is working on a new studio album with different producers and musicians, which he plans to release by September. As an independent musician doing

pretty much everything himself, it was the right choice.

“It’s all me. I’m steering the boat. And it

has been very bountiful,” he said. Berglund will be recording in Lethbridge

with Leeroy Stagger for a day on Feb. 25. “If we get one song, that’s fine, if we get

three, that’s fine, too,” he said. He is pleased with his band. “They’re all really young guys and I’m

only 31,” he said, adding he is excited to bring his music to Lethbridge. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. They’ll turn

the tables over,” he said. The show begins at 9 p.m. Reviews Victoria experimental rock band Mindil

Beach returned to the Owl Acoustic Lounge Feb. 18 to play for a good-sized crowd. Their last Lethbridge show in October

was one of the highlights of the year. They were having a lot of fun, kicked off

their shoes and socks and started jamming and jumping around the stage. This time they played just as well. There

was a little more groove and a little more rapping and maybe a little more ’80s- influenced keyboard hooks, but plenty of tasteful guitar playing, catchy keyboards and a danceable groove keeping the crowd moving. In addition to energetic indie rock, they also added elements of reggae and funk, sometime in the same song, seamlessly switching different genres and time tempos While I missed the first set, after almost

every song in the second set they joked, “This song is about meeting Ron MacLean.” One of many highlights was their beautiful instrumental, “All The Same Speed,” which segued into a cover of the Cranberries’ ’90s hit “Zombie.” They didn’t play a lot of covers, but

chose a couple of ear-benders including one of pop singer Santigold’s “Disparate Youth.” After ending their set with the punkish

“Love Like Mine” and the more funky “Running Wild” from their new two-song EP, they were called back for an encore, this time wearing their shoes for Hot

Chocolate’s 1978 hit “Everyone’s a Winner Baby,” re-popularized in the ’90s by Bootsauce, and popularized again by Mindil Beach. It was a long weekend so everybody was

out in force for some live music on Sunday, Feb. 15. The most popular choice was a double bill with local rock band the Raw Dogs and AC DC tribute Who Made Who. The Raw Dogs, who also opened for

classic rockers Saga the night before, played an energetic set of popular hits from classic rock to newer songs ranging from KISS to the White Stripes. They played a tight set. Vocalist Jesse

Dickson had a powerful voice nailing the higher notes. They had boundless energy and had all the rock star poses down pat. They got a good crowd dancing and singing along to classics like “Johnny Be Good,” Poison’s “Talk Dirty to Me,” The Knack’s “My Sharona,” and the White Stripes’ “7 Nation Army,” plus KISS’s classic “Detroit Rock City.” Who Made Who were impressive as

always, covering all eras of AC DC from Bonn Scott to Brian Johnson and even tapped in the brand new AC DC album “Rock or Bust.” They had the look and sound down right

down to same kind of instruments and outfits; the lead singer looked eerily similar to AC DC frontman Brian Johnson and sang with his throat-rasping purity while channelling the ghost of Bonn Scott and wore Brian Johnson’s miner’s cap and his #22 black-and-white football jersey. The lead guitarist wore Angus Young-style plum shorts and school-boy jacket. They played really old, classic AC DC including “Jailbreak,” “Whole Lot of Rosie,” obscurities and brand new songs like “Rock or Bust,” and of course the classics like “Back in Black” and “Money Talks.” A good-sized crowd came out to the

Slice on a long weekend Sunday, Feb. 15 for Saskatoon indie rock band Close Talker. Frontman Will Quiring observed, “This

is way more people than were here last time we were here.“

They played upbeat, delay-drenched

ambient indie rock along the lines of Vancouver’s indie rock stalwarts like Said the Whale and touched on weirder, 2000s indie rock like Afghan Whigs with a touch of Radiohead. They sang superb vocal harmonies and catchy melodies backed by effects drenched guitar. Matthew Kopperud (guitar, vocals),

Jeremy Olson (vocals, bass), and Chris Morien (vocals, drums) provided waves of ambient sound. Among the early highlights was “She’s On Fire.”

If CKXU loves you, as is their catch

phrase, their audience loves the University of Lethbridge-based community radio station even more. Especially during their pre-Valentine’s Day bash, Feb. 13 at the Slice. The show was sold out by 9:30 p.m. as

the first act, Jolene Draper and Steve Martin playing under the monicker Cupid’s Got a Gun, took the stage. In between bands, Carisa Jayne

performed her sexy burlesque routine while people from Sexxy Kitty plus Amberlea Parker hosted a sex trivia competition with prizes. They played along set of mostly acoustic

versions of a variety of love songs from the era of Buddy Holly to today. Steve Martin alternated between bass

and guitar while adding vocal harmonies to Jolene Draper’s pretty voice. They played a little bit of everything from ’50s rock to more modern love songs. Local rapper Pzeudo was up next. While

I’ve only seen her a couple of times and even though I’m not a big rap fan, with her bright red hair and rapid-fire delivery, she definitely showed her unique personality as she jumped around the stage, grinning and smiling for her whole set. Her set was upbeat rap which seemed to me to be mostly original material with prerecorded beats which had a good-sized crowd cheering
