STAFF TRAINING19

can be matched to skills and suitable suppliers sourced. In the United Kingdom, the RYA’s qualifications can be matched for VHF and boat handling and the national vocational qualification framework can be used for customer service and administrative skills. To bring the core skills under one banner, the British Marine Federation’s Marina Operatives Course is an excellent document, which can be adopted as a template as it encompasses everything from first aid to fire fighting training to security and environmental issues. Yard courses can be more problematic. In the UK, however, the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (www.npors.com) can provide the answer.

One of the main reasons

businesses are reluctant to train is cost. Marina management should check the availability of funding either on a local or regional basis, government level or as part of wider national or EU initiative. Another issue is allowing people time off to attend training. There is

no simple answer to this, but planning well in advance helps. Swapping shifts and splitting attendance on longer courses can solve this issue. Team members feel proud to

be part of an organisation that recognises their welfare and tend to be more enthusiastic about their roles. In turn, this should lead to significantly less staff turnover with a consequent reduction in recruitment and re-training costs. Effective use of time and personnel will boost revenue from boat lifting. In addition, customers will start to comment on the professionalism and confidence of staff. Happy customers tend to mean healthy bottom lines whilst unhappy customers lead to empty berths and no jobs! The Global Marina Institute

(www.globalmarinainstitute. net) recognised the need for international standardisation in marina management training. The Institute organises the Intermediate Marina Manager’s (IMM) school and the Advanced Marina Manager’s (AMM) school, which it has developed over the years. Both are aimed at professionals within the industry with varying degrees of experience. The teaching faculty for these schools includes a balance of training professionals, industry luminaries and working marina managers (CMMs). The AMM is a project-based, five-day residential course, which deals in great depth with all aspects of marina development and management from concept and design through to marketing and health & safety. Schools are held in Europe,

America and Australia and to date some 1,200 marina managers have graduated from this programme. Graduation from this course is a prerequisite for the Certified Marina Manager and Certified Marina Professional qualifications.
