PULSE Strictly Teach Dancing....

Getting kids active through Music and Dance

On 13th November SGO Neil Castle and the schools from Ashford had the opportunity to work with an inspirational dance resources and training company, who specialise in Dance and activity to music for schools.

The 3 hour workshop was all about increasing confidence and improving skills like:

· Working to the beat of the music and cueing movement in time to music

· Using the six principles of Movement and Dance to build themes to music to include travel, turn, jump, gesture, levels and pause

·

Breaking down simple combinations to help children learn quickly and effectively

In just three hours there was a huge improvement in the group’s confidence about teaching Dance and how easy it can be using the imovesdance.com approach. Imogen used these three words throughout her presentation - Fun, Challenging and Achievable – this is the key to success in getting more children active through Movement and Dance.

Imovesdance.com has revolutionised how schools can teach dance, not just in the UK but all over the globe. Their interactive resources have been specifically designed for any teacher to be able to teach PE using Music and Dance. They have taken away all the stress, research and preparation time, allowing teachers to deliver fun themes and styles they have no

previous experience teaching! How? The interactive videos are designed to use as PART of a lesson (doing the tricky steps) the lesson plans help to build up a theme slowly in bite sized chunks, allowing lots of wriggle room for children to do their own choreography and routines. The music is brilliant, totally school friendly and specifically designed for each theme, its funky and “cool” so even those year 5 boys will think it’s great!

The package for primary schools includes 36 different themes and styles from ‘Strictly’ classics to cross-curricular activities, like The Romans or Stonehenge, delivering 150 lessons of fun activity across every age group. The resources come with interactive videos, music, lesson plans, assessment tools and materials to help you teach. In addition, the team will also deliver supportive CPD for schools who require that bit of extra help.

If you want to try four free lessons yourself, log onto imovesdance.com and sign up for the free membership.

To create fun, engaging Dance sessions, three things need to be aligned:

 Great music  Being confident teaching to music  Structure moves and short creative tasks
