PULSE

Medway’s Mini Youth Games series is organised by Medway’s Sports Team and is no mean feat, with over 3,000 primary school children each year now participating.

The first tournament was established in 1999 when 35 school teams entered across eight different sporting competitions. The games have gone from strength with record numbers of schools entering. Summer 2014 saw 53 Medway schools and over 500 children competing for the title of MYG Football champions.

Throughout the years changes have been made to the MYG sporting calendar and it now consists of 10 sports, with a

Swimming gala at Medway Park being a recent addition.

The purpose of the games is to showcase external opportunities and links to strong club environments such as Holcombe Hockey Club where MYG children can compete on the same ground as internationals who play on a weekly basis.

Former MYG competitor, Miri

Taylor, was so inspired as a child with these games that she now plays Football for Chelsea Ladies and as an England International.

The MYG also offers a programme of teacher resources and Mini Youth Sports Coaches support schools with after-school club delivery to

help prepare teams for MYG events and also work alongside school teachers to help up-skill them in their PE and school sport delivery.

It also acts as the Level 2 competition for the Sainsbury’s School Games.
