What do school leaders think?
Have you seen many changes to the Games throughout the years?
The general level of competition and ability has risen. Medway Sports Team has introduced different sports throughout the MYG calendar and more Medway schools are now competing and entering teams for more sports.
Is sport an important part of school life at Wainscott Primary School and do your teams train for the games?
Wainscott Primary School aims to give every child the opportunity to experience as many things as possible, not only academic but in the areas of sport, physical activity and the arts. We encourage all children to participate in our many sporting clubs where children are given the opportunity to discover what they enjoy, are good at and develop their skills. Teams that represent the school at MYG prepare for the competition at these clubs but also train as a squad at other times.
Which Wainscott School MYG achievement have you been most proud of?
As a small school, we are proud to have entered teams for every sport. In the overall competition, we have come within the top four schools for the past eight years and five years ago Wainscott won the MYG Competition against all schools – a fantastic achievement for a small school.
What do you enjoy most about the MYG?
They give so many children the opportunity to try out and compete in many sports that they may one day take up as a pastime or even more seriously. It also gives our more talented children the chance to compete with others of similar ability, thus improving their own performance.
What do the children enjoy most?
The children love to be out of school doing something they really enjoy and gain self-esteem from taking part in something they are good at. They return to school more confident, in a better frame of mind and more ready to try hard in class.
What is your favourite competition?
Difficult to choose one but if pushed, I would say High 5 Netball and Cricket. I love watching boys and girls competing in the same team together, at this age it’s a ‘level playing field’ and many girls are just as good, sometimes better than the boys.
And your hopes for Wainscott’s future achievements?
I would hope that Wainscott continues to offer all it’s pupils the opportunity to take part in, and enjoy sports and games.
Interview with Mr Donovan, Deputy Head Teacher at Wainscott Primary School who has been in attendance at every Mini Youth Games since they started.
Danny Hodges age 11
Danny Hodges, Year 6 pupil at St Mary’s Island Primary School has competed in MYG Badminton, Cricket and Tag Rugby for his school team.
He was very proud to represent his school and be a part of the overall winning team for 2013-2014 MYG series. He says that their success was down to their new coach Mr Harvey, who encourages sport and fitness within the school, and gives
everyone the opportunity to ‘try out’ for each team.
Danny enjoys the competitive and friendly atmosphere at the MYG and loves the feeling of being chosen to represent the school. Playing Badminton in the professional environment at Medway Park and coming back for the Night of Champions was a particular highlight.
He already is a keen sportsman and this year hopes to be chosen to compete in more teams, especially the Football.
