Quicksticks The schools’ view
An excellent resource, easy for teachers to use, whether experienced or not, containing lots of great ideas so that our children learned basic skills quickly while having great fun. We have used it to introduce Hockey to the school and our children now think it is a brilliant sport that they want to continue playing.
1. Why did your school choose Quicksticks Hockey?
i.e. dribbling passing etc. and it made all of the children concentrate.
4. You play with mixed teams don’t you? How do the boys and girls get on playing together?
Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club (FOHC) kindly offered to send in a qualified coach to come into school and provide all the equipment we would need for sessions to take place. Hockey is not usually done in lessons so it was also a chance for pupils to try something new.
2. How did the children take to it?
There was mixed ability but they all took to it well and they all loved the game play. They also all managed to play a game by the end of the first session and we eventually entered three teams in a tournament run by FOHC. One of the teams even won it!!
3. Was it hard to pick up?
By the end of the sessions all children could do the basic elements of Hockey
”
All the children got on well together, although obviously children want to be on teams with their friends. They preferred playing with others of a similar ability and this also made them pass more within the team so they didn’t think they could rely on one player. They showed a real team effort.
5. Do the kids enjoy it?
Yes, we have had players join the local club and as mentioned before all of the children wanted to take part in the tournament therefore we had to enter
three teams. We will definitely be continuing with Hockey after half term.
6. If another school asked you about Quicksticks Hockey and its merits, what would you say?
It’s a really good way to introduce Hockey and can be adapted to suit the context. It is a great way to get a larger number of children running around and doing some sport. We did not need anything to be able to qualify for the tournament and all the children enjoyed it. The tournament was also a real bonus as it gave the children something to aim for.

Having used Quicksticks in both first and middle schools it is an excellent vehicle to deliver the fundamental skills of sending, receiving, controlling a ball . It also delivers invasion games tactics and strategies and as age progresses a quality pathway experience onto In2 Hockey; The full game with access to the single system player pathway provided by England Hockey.
”
The equipment and teaching resources are amazing. The teachers love how easy it is to use and the children love the activities. It promotes independent learning, with children taking cards and running activities themselves.
We even won our local Hockey tournament!
”
Quicksticks provides a great introduction to Hockey for young people in primary schools. It provides a developmental approach with appropriate equipment that allows children to engage and make progress. It also provides opportunities for children to further develop key life skills through adopting leadership roles during games.
