Safeguarding Matters

What is the Child Protection in Sport Unit (thecpsu.org.uk)?

The Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) is a partnership between the NSPCC, Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland and Sport Wales.

The Unit was founded in 2001 to work with UK Sports Councils, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) and other organisations to help them minimise the risk of child abuse during sporting activities. This followed a series of high profile cases of abuse of young athletes by those in positions of trust such as coaches in the sports.

Kent Sports role in Safeguarding (www.kentsport.org/cyp_ safeguarding.asp):

Kent Sport is committed to working in partnership with organisations

delivering sport within the County, to promote best practice when working with children, young people and vulnerable adults. Information is provided to help safeguard young people from potential abuse, as well as protecting staff, volunteers and other adults in positions of responsibility from allegations of abuse.

Kent Sport works closely with the CPSU who provide training, advice and guidance to County Sports Partnerships across the country.

As part of Pulse, a regular feature on Safeguarding will be included and for this edition we will be looking at the delivery of safe events. The CPSU have created an online tool that will help ensure that you meet the safeguarding responsibilities for your event. This is also useful in identifying what your school should expect when attending events run by other schools/ organisations.

The areas covered include:

1) The basics (safeguarding plan, partnership check and challenge tool, lead safeguarding roles, policies and procedures)

2) Creating a safe environment (codes of conduct, risk assessment, ratios, missing, participants, registration and consents, medical information and security)

3) Roles and responsibilities (recruitment, employment and deployment of staff and volunteers, responsibilities of children, young people and parents/carers, basic requirements of staff and volunteers with safeguarding responsibility)

4) Recognising and responding to concerns (what to do if a concern arises, whistleblowing)

5) Additional vulnerabilities (e.g. disabled young athletes, social media)

Travel and overnight stays (planning, communication with parents, carers

and athletes, assessing the risks, transport, emergency procedures, insurance cover, supervising children and young people, accommodation and catering)

The tool is completely FREE and can be found at: thecpsu.org.uk/event- management
