POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

After Another Busy Summer

Events And Standards Take Centre Stage

AS SUMMER DRAWS TO A CLOSE, FOR MANY, THE DECENT WEATHER HAS MEANT BUSY AND HOPEFULLY PROFITABLE MONTHS. AS AUTUMN NOW ARRIVES, BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS HAYES LOOKS AT WHAT LIES AHEAD IN THE COMING MONTHS

A

s autumn is upon us, we can reflect on a summer that has been generally very beneficial to our industry. It is vital that we all continue to promote the benefits of pool, spa, sauna and steam ownership and a decent amount of sunshine will always generate its own demand for our products!

This time of year brings with it a number of exhibitions and they kick off with LIW and move onto venues in other parts of Europe and also further afield. SPATA will again be working with UBM (the show organisers) to exhibit at LIW, to support the SPATA members that attend the show and to promote the Trade Association to this very important commercial audience. There is a wide range of educational talks available and a number of other wet leisure exhibitors to meet. LIW is being held from 30 September to 2 October and with a great deal of attention being shown, it is the UK’s biggest annual gathering of leisure professionals and the Pool & Spa section will be featuring a number of exhibitors. The STA Swim Zone will be back and RAPs will return to share their progress and plans for the future with the opportunity to learn and develop skills as they host aquatic specific workshops and seminars endorsed by SkillsActive. For more information visit www.liw.co.uk

As this issue of SPN is being finalised, there will have been a meeting of TC 402 WG2 on domestic swimming pool water filtration, circulation and treatment. Hopefully, the public comments will be incorporated into the draft documents and then these European standards will be ready to be voted on. Any of

the important changes will be shared with the UK industry.

The signs are looking very encouraging that the funding and support is in place for work to begin on developing European standards for domestic spas and hot tubs. BISHTA has been instrumental in moving this important work forward and is working with German colleagues in DIN to prepare the materials needed to launch this Working Group. Staying with a European theme, congratulations to all of the BISHTA and SPATA award winners that have been shortlisted for the EUSA 2014 awards to be held at Piscine Global in Lyon. I trust that there will be some useful publicity for you as a shortlisted entrant and Sallie Golding will work with any members that may be lucky enough to win an award in November. Also in this issue of SPN, there is a very important article from Howard Gosling regarding the new legislation on Explosives Precursors. This topic was covered at the BSPF AGM in September and my thanks are expressed to Kelly Warren from Avon & Somerset Police and also to Peter Newport from Chemical Business Association. By the time that you read this article, the

AGM’s for BSPF, BISHTA and SPATA will have taken place. My thanks have already been expressed to Kelly Warren and Peter Newport for their presentation and my sincere gratitude is also given to Dr David Lapham (Pera Technology) for his contribution on funding opportunities for our industry. Issy and Kevin Rickards Sanger have hosted their President’s Weekend at Cricket St Thomas near Chard, Somerset and it is hoped to include photos of this (and some of the

other events) in the December issue of SPN. Looking ahead to SPATEX 2015, there are updates from Michele, Helen and Penny on page 38. Plans continue to ensure the social side of the event being held from 1 to 3 February are in place and the Industry Gala Dinner will again be open to everyone (not just SPATA and BISHTA members). Finally from me, I am delighted that in this issue, there is a member focus on Howards Hydrocare (BISHTA).SPN
