SDL, the Maidenhead-based IT group that allows companies to optimise their customers’ experience through its web content management and translation services among other things, saw its share price rise more than any other major company in the Thames Valley during October.

It was helped by an announcement that it had achieved 18% new licence bookings growth and 80% growth in new licence bookings throughout the EMEA region in the first six months of 2014, with 50% of new customers purchasing multiple solutions from the SDL Customer Experience Cloud.

“This adoption underscores the market momentum being generated by customers who are looking for a truly integrated approach to customer experience,” said SDL, which helps 79 of the

top 100 global brands, including nine of the top 10 global software leaders.

De La Rue, the Basingstoke-based banknote printing specialist, saw its share price rise after signing a new 10-year contract with the Bank of England to print its sterling notes at the Bank’s facility in Essex.

It follows the previous month’s announcement that it had been named preferred bidder for the contract, and continues a relationship that dates back for many years.

Biggest share rise of the month was by Triad Group, the Godalming IT consulting company which earlier this year announced a £13 million profit following a £30,000 loss the previous year.

Buckinghamshire Education, Skills and Training appoints general manager

Ian Harper, former chief executive of ATG Training in Aylesbury, has been appointed as the first general manager of Buckinghamshire Education, Skills and Training (BEST), the new partnership venture between Buckinghamshire New University and Aylesbury College.

BEST is jointly owned by the University and College and is a separate company operating alongside the two institutions. It provides a vehicle to pool the partners’ leadership, industry links and expertise, and therefore enable a broader range of educational opportunities to meet the region’s education and skills needs.

The BEST general manager post is an entirely new role and Harper’s primary responsibilities are to oversee BEST’s projects including links with employers, and to manage the development and running of BEST’s new higher and professional education campus, University Campus Aylesbury Vale (UCAV) in Aylesbury, set to open in October 2015.

Harper, who started in the role in early November, said: “I’m delighted to join BEST and look forward to establishing it as part of Buckinghamshire’s educational offer. The plans for University Campus Aylesbury Vale are very exciting, and the modern facility will host education and training opportunities from Bucks New University and Aylesbury College in a striking setting. I look forward to welcoming the first students and delegates next year.”

Harper has lived and worked in Buckinghamshire for most of his life. After gaining a degree in chemical physics, he started work in the training department of Harrods. After five years he moved to ATG Training as a training officer where he benefited from ATG’s sponsorship of postgraduate management qualifications, enabling him to rise through the organisation and become chief executive in 2010. With interests in education and opportunities for young people, Harper is involved in Young Enterprise in Bucks and is a governor of Elmhurst School in Aylesbury.

Prof Ruth Farwell, chief executive of BEST and vice chancellor of Bucks New University, said: “This appointment signifies a considerable milestone in the development of the new partnership between Aylesbury College and Bucks New University, and firmly marks our commitment to broadening and improving employer-linked educational opportunities.

“Ian comes to us with a proven track record of success. His appointment will help us to combine the expertise and experiences of the University and College, and through BEST provide a strengthened approach to adapting to and fulfilling Buckinghamshire’s educational skills needs and contributing to the region’s economy.”
