As a very green company itself, Grundon was again the fitting sponsor of this category. Well known for its waste collection services, Grundon is also an innovator in diverting waste from landfill, through recycling and treatment solutions, such as its energy-from-waste facility near the M4-M25 junction at Colnbrook.

There were four finalists for this category:

Chiltern Railways one of the fastest growing train operators in the UK, now building a new rail line linking Oxford to London, the first such new rail-link for more than a century. This investment, which will provide a new station north of Oxford, follows £130 million spent by Chiltern on speeding up its Birmingham to London line;

Cofely GDF Suez is a leading provider of integrated services, specialising in energy, technical and facilities management. The company, based in High Wycombe, creates innovative solutions that improve the efficiency of cities, buildings, industry and infrastructure in order to reduce costs, environmental impact and to maximise operational resilience;

Buckinghamshire-headquartered GE Healthcare had to settle for third place this time around, with second place going to Chiltern Railways. A Highly Commended category certificate was awarded to Dell Corporation.

The judges said progress in innovation, sustainability and employee engagement were cornerstones in the environmental progress made by Cofely GDF Suez.

“They have undertaken extensive site refurbishments to improve efficiencies and reduce emissions and through correct segregation of waste in a dedicated onsite compound have ensured that, for the third year running, they have diverted 100% of their waste from landfill.

“Every element of this year’s winner’s operation is geared to ensure sustainability, whether it be through rigorous auditing of energy usage through to local sourcing and on-site growing of food produce for the staff restaurant. They have not only focused on staff engagement to promote their green and community initiatives, but through themed events, have actively empowered them to go the extra mile.”

to teamwork: “We have a great team supported by Cofely and also a very engaged customer that places sustainability at the top of their agenda, plus, we have very good service partners. Together that enables us to work in a such a way that we can implement all these initiatives, including zero waste landfill.”

The sustainability mantra of ‘use less, reuse, recycle’ had to be embraced by all concerned, and he praised the work of the company’s 15,200 staff, all influential in working within customers’ premises to promote the green message, and ultimately save money, resources and the environment.

“Hugely admirable, congratulations,” commented Fiona Bruce, her words echoed by loud audience applause.
