Federation Family—Leah Norris
Did you know?????? When you think about all the people in the Florida Fair
Family, you think you know them. But there are many of our Fair Friends that have very interesting and unique hob- bies that few know about.
That is why we are going to
start highlighting these individuals and their special hob- bies. Our first installment is David Viers, Executive Director of the Volusia County Fair. We all know David as a Director, Past President, and Hall of Fame recipient of the Florida Federation of Fairs, but did you know he used to build race cars, collects pins, and is an avid Little League fan? Viers built his first race car in 1964 while still in high
school. Upon graduating he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Merced, California, where he ran in Demo- lition Derbies. In 1968 he built a street stock car and ran at Merced Speedway. He won his first feature race in April of that year and was leading in the points when he was sent overseas to Thailand for a year. David was discharged from the Air Force on July 5, 1969, and upon returning home, he bought a car and started rac- ing at DeLand Raceway in the Late Model Division. In April 1970 he was introduced to his wife, Paulette, at DeLand Raceway. In 1971 he began racing at Volusia County Speedway, in Barberville, and soon that was his “home” track. David and Paulette were married in 1972. Viers continued to race until 1982, finishing in the Top 15 racers in the State each year. He would travel to Columbia
County Speedway, Jacksonville Speedway, Brunswick
Speedway and Ocala Speedway. His first time back to Oca- la in 1979, he won the feature race. As the years pro- gressed, keeping and running a race car became too much of a financial burden, and David had to take a leave from the racetrack. David did not waste time getting involved in another hob-
by! In 1980 he began participating in Little League base- ball as a parent when his son started playing with South- west Volusia Little League. He helped coach his son’s team 1981-1982. He quickly became the President of the South- west Volusia Little League in 1983-1984 and stayed with the league as an umpire until 1991. In 1991, he began to umpire for the Lake Helen Little League until 1993. In 1988, David became the Assistant District Administra-
tor for District 14 and in 1993 became the District Adminis- trator for Florida District 19. He still holds that position. Viers is currently the First Vice President of the Florida Dis- trict Administrators Association. In 1987, Viers started trading pins when he attended the Senior League World Series. This series was held in Kis- simmee until 2001. He started attending the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA in 2002 and has attended every year since. At the present time, David has 135 2’x3’ cork boards of pins that he has collected over the years. *If you or someone at your Fair has a unique hobby please let
Leah Norris and Lisa Hinton know so they can be showcased in the Faircracker.
