From the Executive Director Wow - Fall Fair season is here! Hope those Fairs that have already finished had a great run and GOOD LUCK to those of you that are in your final planning stages! We know what a busy time this is for you! It was a great Summer for the Federation – we had a fantastic Summer Workshop in West Palm hosted by the South Florida Fair. The staff and Board definitely rolled out the red carpet to make it a memorable event! If you haven’t been to Summer Workshop you should think about it for next year. It is a chance to really get to meet and talk to people from other Fairs in a very relaxed, informal atmosphere. We also had another great Fair trip – Fair Trip 2014! We visited the Calgary Stampede and brought back a multitude of new ideas. You REALLY should think about joining us next year – wherever we go, I can assure you that you will get lots of new ideas and have a blast! This year’s Annual Directory has been published and distributed. A special thanks to Doris Graska – she spent a tremendous amount of time editing the Directory for accuracy. Thanks also to Rita DeMier for doing the layout for the cover with this year’s Photo Contest winners. The Direc- tory wouldn’t have happened without help from both of them! Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2015 Convention – May 14 – 16th in St. Augustine! We will be at the Renaissance Resort at the World Golf Village this year - it is a beautiful facility and a great location for the convention. The Golf Tournament will be AWESOME as well - you won’t want to miss it – May 13th!

If there is anything I can do for you – please don’t hesitate to give me a call and thanks again for all your support! Don’t forget –YOU are the Federation and our organization is here to serve you!

Sincerely Lisa Hinton, Executive Director, CFE

Attorney’s Corner “Annual Review of Accounts and Records”

Given that Fair Associations

are trustees of public proper- ty and monies, Chapter 616 of

the Florida Statutes re-

quires that an annual review be conducted concerning the accounts and records of each Fair Association. Specifically, Section 616.101 of the Flori- da Statutes provides: The accounts and records of every fair

association

whose annual public fair has an annual attendance of more than 25,000 shall be reviewed annually by a qualified accountant licensed by the state. A fair association whose annual public fair has an annual attendance of 25,000 or fewer must submit an an- nual financial statement that has been signed by an officer of the county. The results of the reviews shall be kept in the official records of each associa- tion, available to all directors of the association. A certified copy of the review shall be filed with the department: (1) On request by the department to certify ex-

penditures of the premiums awarded to exhibitors of a fair or of building funds when there is evidence of violation of state laws; or (2) When the association is applying for a fair

permit. Accordingly, always make certain that your Fair

Association is complying with this provision as it is good public policy and also can have a direct impact on the issuance of the fair’s permit.
