The fun doesn't stop
Looking outside as I write this, the sky is completely obscured by cloud. The thought of putting on a warm jumper has transferred into performing the act. Days are getting shorter, garden growth is diminishing and many in the natural world are preparing to sleep.
But this is not the time to rest with them; not when Kent offers so many interesting and unusual things to do, regardless of the weather.
A fine example is the Kent Experience Days (see page 33). The participation opportunities are endless, with scary (ghost tours),
exhilarating (bungee jumping, skydiving), scenic (helicopter tours), educational (cooking classes) and relaxing (pamper and spa days) attractions throughout the county, depending on your mood and taste. Many of these would be great experiences regardless of the weather.
In the unlikely event that none of the experience days take your fancy, a trip to one
of Kent’s several wildlife parks will surely float your boat. Pick out red squirrels at Wildwood; meet the lizards at the Rare Breeds Centre; go on an African safari at Port Lympne; and admire the lions at Howletts.
And what’s more, wildlife parks are sure to be a great deal safer than visiting a jungle on a faraway continent. Just ask Tom Hart Dyke, who used his nine months in captivity in South America to plan a World Garden for the more amenable environs of Lullingstone Castle, attracting visitors from far and wide.
If an armed gang couldn’t stop Tom, neither should autumn stop all of us from enjoying this great county.
