Help to update warmemorial

LEYBOURNE Parish Council has received lottery money to update the village war memorial. The council’sWorldWar I project

to refurbish the memorial and add four missing names has attracted a grant of £5,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A book to mark the centenary of

WorldWar I, bringing together pic- tures, newspaper cuttings, docu- ments and letters from the time, will also be collated and lodged with the parish council archives. Cllr Mick Mearns, vice-chair of Leybourne Parish Council, told the Downs Mail that details about the village and those who fought in the conflictwere stillwelcome. He added: “We are thrilled to

have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and look forward to knowing who these men were, rather than them just being names carved in granite.” Stuart McLeod, head of the Her-

itage Lottery Fund South East, said more than £57 million had been made available for World War I

centenary projects. He added: “With our new small

grants programme,we are enabling even more communities like those at Leybourne to explore the contin- uing legacy of this conflict and help local people broaden their under- standing of how it has shaped our modernworld.”

WORKon transforming part of the air control tower at Kings Hill into a Costa Coffee shop was expected to be completed in September. The Grade II listed building

played a vital role during World War II, responsible for the pilots based atWest Malling airfield, but fell into disrepair after the air base closed to makeway for commercial and housing development. Listed building consent for inter-

nal fitting and external Costa signs was granted last month by Ton- bridge and Malling Council. A planning officer’s report said

the proposed signwas discreet and had been moved from the original part of the tower to the modern pod extension. The internal fittings had been re-

vised within the course of the ap- plication to move away from the

standard Costa interior, resulting in a bespoke scheme in grey with hints of coral, yellow and bur- gundy. The officer said: “I am satisfied

that the various alterations are ap- propriate for this important build- ing and will ensure that it is preserved for future generations.” Andrew Blevins, managing di-

rector of developer Liberty Poperty Trust UK, said when the scheme was initially proposed: “We want people to enjoy and use the build- ing, but have been careful to retain its spirit. It was a living, busy focal point of the former airfield and we wanted to retain that character and not put it in aspic by turning it in to a museum.” Costa already has a branch in nearby Liberty Square at Kings Hill.
